Should I take an enema?

My doctor told me that I won't need to take an enema or laxative before surgery. I was happy to hear this news until a friend told that I had better take one anyway because otherwise I will be in a lot more discomfort after my vaginal hysterectomy.

Is this true? Should I clean myself out the day before even though the doc says it's unnecessary?

Should I take an enema?

From what I've heard from other women, if the doc didn't say do it, don't. It may take you longer to have a bm and get out of the hospital. If you are really concerned about it, call the doc and ask.

I didn't have to take one before my surgery either. Please do not clean yourself out unless the dr tells you too. Each dr has different techniques and that's why some ladies have to do that and some don't. Just be happy like I was that you don't have to do that!

Should I take an enema?

I had my preop yesterday w/ my gyn and she doesn't require it. She said if I am really uncomfortable after surgery they can use a really helpful suppository. She just said to make sure that I eat light the day before my surgery.

Should I take an enema?

Please follow your Dr's orders. If he/she does not order a bowel prep, then don't do one. You can cause your surgery to be postponed if you do one unnecessarily, and you get dehydrated or get your electrolytes out of balance.

I didn't have a bowel prep or a special diet of any kind the day before surgery. I did fine.
