Blood donation pre-surgery

My DH has been reading up (though the library book is form 1995) and was asking about donating blood pre-op. dis any of you donate before surgery? I was wondering if it is a good idea, left a message for Dr but have not had an answer. With me being anemic from the constant periods, is it a good idea?

Blood donation pre-surgery

Hi, I'm also anemic, and my Dr. said it would not be a good idea to donate my own blood. She dosen't even feel i'll need any during surgery, but knows how nervous I am about this and told me she would have a "cell savor" in the OR and they would then recycle (clean)my own blood and reuse it if needed. I hope this helps.

Blood donation pre-surgery

I was given the option to donate but when I discussed it with the doctors office they said if I was anemic they would not take it.

You may be able to donate if you levels are high enough if you have been taking iron supplements for the anemia. Your doctor should be able to tell you if you are a candidate.

Most will say there is only a small chance that you will need blood during the procedure. Although I would have liked to have my own blood around "just in case", I didn't think not having it around was that big a deal.

Best wishes and s

I donated my own blood but it made me very tired before the surgery. It turns out I didn't need it, but it was reassuring to know it was there just in case.
