Iron Supplements?
My surgery (LAVH) is scheduled for Dec. 27th. My sister suggested that I start taking iron supplements. Sounded like a good idea, but when I got to the store there must be 20 different kinds and variations. Does anyone know what I should take?

Iron Supplements?
You know, I'm just trying so hard not to get sick, I've started drinking orange juice for the vitamin C. And I also just bought a multi-vitamin/mineral supplement and started taking that. Just the regular kind, with everything in it, that can't hurt.

Iron Supplements?
I know this sounds kinda dumb, but after my surgery my DR put me on Pre-natal vits and Iron(the iron was cus I lost alot of blood and had a blood transfusion afterwards. The Iron had other vits with it, mine was a prescription called Chromagen. Don't know if you can get it wothout a script or not, but you could ask the pharmicist and then maybe get something close to that. Good luck to the both of you

Thank you dijoanne. Oh, you needed a transfusion? I was told of that possibility but I didn't know how often it's needed. Hope not. I used to buy those maternity vits right in the pharmacy.

Iron Supplements?
Blunderful you should call your doctor and see if they have a recommendation. They can let you know what you should take before your surgery.
Mine is keeping me on iron 3x a day 65 mg each but that is because I'm severely anemic. Your doctor should be able to let you know if a multivitamin or supplements will be good for you.

Iron Supplements?
My dr. found out that I was severely anemic during the pre-op labs. He prescribed iron tablets 324 mg., yes 324 mg. tabs 3 times a day in the 2 days before surgery, while I was in the hospital and for the month after. I still received 3 units of blood, 2 during surgery and 1 the next day. I left the hospital with H&H of 8.9 and 24!. I have not been tested since, but figure I am fine. I still take a 65 mg. tab at least every other day to make sure everything is OK.

Iron Supplements?
I would suggest you discuss the iron supplement with your doctor. My blood level usually averaged around 11.4. My primary doctor had me taking 65 mg of iron once daily. Five days before surgery I was at 12.5. I did lose a lot of blood during surgery but did not need a transfusion. I'm still taking the iron at the advice of my primary doctor.

I also would suggest that you speak with your doctor. I had some blood work done at my pre-op appointment and my hemoglobin was low. I received a call from my doctor's office and he put me on 2 Niferex capsules every day,(iron supplements) about two weeks before surgery and to continue them for about 3 months. The nurse said that I would be very fatigued after surgery if I didn't take them.
I had a TAH/BSO in August and am feeling great. It was so worth the surgery not to have severe monthly pain and heavy periods anymore.

Iron Supplements?
Blunderful, I would not take anything unless your doctor recommends it. I have been on over 1000 mg of iron (yes, I said 1000 mg) for over 3 months and it doesn't do very nice things to your body, even in small doses. If you feel you NEED to take something, just get a good women's multivitamin. They have extra folic acid and iron in them. Good luck! Meri
