Pre surgury routine?

Ok I have a question. Do you have to do anything the day before your surgery? My doctor never mentioned anything, besides the normal no advil, asprin that kind of thing. Do you have to do enema or anything like that. I sure hope not!! But just thought I would ask to prepair myself.

Pre surgury routine?

Hi Wendy!

From what I've read here prior to my surgery, it varies depending on your doctor.

My doctor is of the belief that it is better to do bowel prep prior to the surgery to avoid any contamination in the event of a nick in the bowel during surgery.

I had to drink two small bottles (can't remember the name!) approximately 5 hours apart. It really wasn't bad; you just need to be near a bathroom during the process. One of the HysterSisters also mentioned that drinking white grape juice after drinking the laxative helped take away the not-too-pleasant taste of the laxative. Worked great!!

As many other HysterSisters have said, the waiting is really the worst part. Remember to listen to you dr. Rest, rest, rest and drink plenty of water following the surgery.

s to you and best wishes for an uneventful surgery and restful recovery.

Keep us posted on your recovery.

Pre surgury routine?

It's whatever the dr prescribes. I did not have to do anything for my tvh. But, I ate very lightly a few days before anyway.

Pre surgury routine?

I had to drink 2 bottles of Magnesium Citrate before surgery, go to an all liquid diet as soon as I started drinking the Mag Citrate, cut my meds down to the absolute necessary to make it to the surgery (I take 40 pills a day), and up my IV infusion fluids and glucose to compensate for the liquid diet prior to the surgery.

The Magnesium Citrate, commonly called Mag Citrate, doesn't taste that pleasant. However, if you get the lemon lime or the cherry, it is better than the unflavored. I have to drink the Mag Citrate on a regular basis anyway, and always suck the salt off the pretzels before and after each chug-a-lug.

Some doctors don't want their patients drinking the cherry because of the coloring before surgery, so if your doc says to do the mag citrate, make sure and ask him/her if the cherry is ok with him/her or not.

Some doctors prefer their patients to do the fleet enemas for bowel prep over the mag citrate, each seems to have their own preferences.

Just make sure that with any bowel prep you don't have anything else to do, and stay near the bathroom, and find a good book!

If you go on a clear liquid diet, then I reccomend a variety of liquids. Again, a lot of sisters here seem to have some differing opinions on that, some say you should only do water. My doctor wanted me drinking water, but he also wanted me drinking gatorade, eating jell-o and popsicles also. He said that way the body does not go into as much shock and the electrolytes in your body stay balanced. He said that is important pre-surgery. Talk to your doctor about what their idea of a 'clear liquid diet' is, and make sure to follow it. My doctor did not want me drinking red anything or eating red jell-o, so ask your doc about that too.

Before my surgery I mainly rested and tried to stay sane. LOL. In some ways I was lucky that my surgery was the first of the morning, but in other ways I was DREADING getting up at 4:30 am. In the end, I didn't sleep the night before anyway, so it was good it was early! Otherwise I think I would have been a little loopy by the time my surgery time rolled around! I watched TV the whole night before and was lucky that there were some good lifetime movies on!

I reccomend making up a list of questions to ask your doctor, to make sure that you have all the answers you need.

s, I know you will do ok!

Pre surgury routine?

Docs vary widely on their procedures. I did not have to do any sort of bowel prep before surgery -- just nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before.

The most important thing to do is to follow your doc's instructions to the letter so that you present to the hospital in the condition they're expecting. If you're given an instruction for bowel prep, or for a bland or liquid diet, do it. If not, you really can eat whatever you want the day before surgery -- pizza, steak, Chinese food, whatever... And if they say no bowel prep, don't give yourself an enema or take any laxatives. Both can be very dehydrating, and again, you don't want to show up at the hospital already dehydrated.

The day before my surgery I relaxed, watched some funny TV, and spent time with my kids.

Hope this helps.
