I thought I was done...

Hi All!

I thought I was done with this a year ago. I hade my TAH RSO during the 1st week of November in 2004. It was a long road to recovery. I never really felt like my bladder got back to normal, but my gyn surgeon kept "blowing" me off and telling me this was "normal." I decided everytime I sneezed or coughed and leaked urine it wasn't normal and I was starting to have pelvic pain again. I found a great female gyn surgeon who found my left ovary had grown to the size of a large orange and was very cystic. She also suspected I was suffering from interstitial cystitis of my bladder. She removed my remaining ovary and fallopian tube, great deal of endometreosis and comfirmed the interstitial cystitis which was causing a ton of other systemic problems through out my lungs and sinus. So weird!

We now that I am in surgical menopause, she is giving me Effexor to reduce those symptoms until she can start me on hormones...making sure all enometriosis is completely starved out. I am have some completely insatiable hunger cravings and wanting to eat all the time. I'm wondering if this is a normal symptom. I had just taken the weight of I had gained from the first surgery and do not want to gain it back but I am hungry all the time and nothing seems to satisfy me. I'm wondering if this is some deficiency somewhere. Thanks in advance for any like experiences.

Happy Holidays!

Stephanie

I thought I was done...

I am not sure Effexor causes hunger or weight gain. I checked on the side effects for it and non was listed for this problem.

I am on estrogen and I do have an increased appetite and a little weight gain, but I take care of this by eating protein, veggis and fruits, whole grains, limited sugar and almost no white rice, flour or potatoes. I exercise 3x a week.

I think we can manage this problem with changes. It does get harder as I have gotten older so some of it is age, going through surgical menopause and or hormones or lack of, or meds.

I thought I was done...

I was on Effexor several years ago (before hyst) and it had the complete opposite effect on me, absolutely no appetite! I was down to 112lbs at 5'6". In fact, as I came off of it, my appetite grew tremendously. I have heard though that some antidepressants can make people more hungry and put on weight. I haven't heard of this specifically with Effexor but I suppose it is possible as we all react different to meds. It might also be that since you are in less pain (I am assuming) and maybe feeling better your appetite may have improved. Just a thought. Also, interestingly, if you look in the list of Too Much/Too Little estrogen, progesterone, testosterone link below, it mentions food cravings as a sign of too little progesterone. So that might be another possiblility. Hope you get things figured out.

Thanks for the link. I think it is totally a lack of progesterone. All I want to eat is yogurt and granola. Worse things I guess! Except I have already put on 10lbs since my last dr visit which was 10 days ago, 3 days before surgery. I can't take the hormones for 3 months because endometriosis regrowth. Thanks for the info.
