I am 34 and scheduled for a TAH on jan 12.I have 5 sisters an the oldest (45)had a tah 2 yrs ago.The next(41)needs one but can"t have the surgery now(heart problems). The 3rd(40) has fibroids and has been informed she needs a hysterectomy. The 4th(39) just had a TVH on the 15th of Dec.The 5th(38) had a TVH about 9 months ago. That's 6 sisters under the age of 46 who have or need hysterectomies.Has anyone heard of a family connection like this? Some have endometreosis, some have fibroids or adhesions or combinations of.Any responses would be appreciated. Thanks ladies!

any 1 have family connections? 4 of 6 in my fam

Hi Mikimiki,

I am one of 3 sisters and we have all had fibroids.

Our story starts with my 78 yr. old mother. She had smaller fibroids for years and never had a hyst. I am the oldest sister and I had my hyst last year. My 2nd sister has large fibroids right now and is doing ~observation~ and from what my mom says, she may have to have a TAH very soon. My youngest sister had a myomectomy several years ago to remove her grapefruit sized fibroid and then went on to have two daughters.

Best wishes,

Mary

I am also one of three sisters who have all had hysterectomies due to fibroids. Our mother also had a hysterectomy for the same reason, although much later in life after continued bleeding in her mid-60s.

I have read that fibroids are hereditary and we certainly proved this theory!

I have six sisters. My older sister had a hysterectomy several years before I did due to fibroids. My hyst was in 1999, also for fibroids. The remaining five have reached the age of menopause with no problems and no hysterectomies in their futures. My mother is 84 years old, and she still has her uterus and ovaries. So in my family, there is no genetic connection.

According to my mother (who has passed) I'm the only female on either side of the family to have had any problems. My mom was 43 when I was born, I'm 36 and the youngest of 8 with two sisters. No one talked about their female issues back then, so who knows. She used to get very upset with me as a teen because I would be so miserable, and she thought it was in my head. I have 2 children, but had 4 miscarriages, 3 of them were after the first trimester. My sisters can't comprehend what I'm going through because they rarely even have cramps. I think I'm going to call my aunt and ask her. I know that one of my cousins, her daughter had a hysterectomy a few years ago, but I never knew why. My aunt had a lot of problems carrying children too, and would be more apt to discuss it with me more then my mom was.

From what I have read, fibroids are very common amoung mothers and sisters, you should do a web search and check it out. I know they haven't really found a genetic connection, but are searching for one.

Its terrible that all of you have had to go through all this, I hope that your family have been a source for support for each other.

Prayers to you for a speedy healthy recovery.

I believe there is a connection in a family. My Grammy, my mom, my aunt, my sister and myself have all had hysts for some reason or another..... I've heard that female problems are hereditary on the female side of family. I just hope I don't inherit my Grammy and Aunts breast cancer. They have both had masectomies (both breasts removed). But at the ripe old age of 35 I have had 2 mammograms and so far so good. And my mom and sister are all clear too..... :-)
Hope all is well in your family of women...
Merry Christmas,
Krista

Yep, I think pretty much all the women in my family have had one. My grandmother was the first way back when it wasn't so common, then Mom had one back in the seventies. My sister had one some twenty years ago, and this year it was my turn.

My grandma (who is 88 or 89 now) had an emergency hysterectomy when she was about 30 for hemorraging and a big fibroid that was coming out. Her daughters (my mom and my aunt) both had hysterectomies for prolapse. Me, (I'm 46) I am having a hysterectomy due to a 6 cm. fibroid that grew in between annual exams. My Aunt's daughters (there are 4) so far have not had much female problems. I have read on different internet sites that fibroids are not hereditary, I have read that they are hereditary. I think that they are. Paula
