Explaining to my 3 yr old?

my kids were 3 and 5 when i had my surgery. they went and had a long "sleepover" at a friends house while i was at the hospital. she kept them for 2 days afterwards, too. i am a divorced mom and my ex-husband doesn't live close.

anyway, for the bathing, my oldest could turn the water on and off. my three year old could get in and out of the tub by herself. they could kind of wash their own hair, but 3 n 5 year olds can wash their own little bodies with one of those puffy things. since it was winter, i didn't obsess about getting dirt and sand out of their hair like i would in the summer. they certainly weren't 110% clean, but hey..i learned to prioritize what was important.

i wouldn't describe too much to her about the procedure. i told my kids i had to go to the hospital for an operation and that i might not feel well afterwards. my son asked if i was sick, and i told him just a little bit but that my doctor was really smart and was going to make me better. i had a tvh, so i had no incision, which certainly was helpful for snuggling in bed with my kids. they hung out in my room and watched nicktoons alot while i dozed occasionally.

buy special, easy treats that your daughter will love and can get for herself, like ritz bitz, baby carrots, string cheese, gogurt or yogurt and maybe even some popsicles! don't stress too much about things that really aren't important short term, like having a spotless house, the laundry all folded and preparing a 3 course meal. don't over exert yourself. take the time to get feeling better so you can be the mommy you want to be even sooner.

you will be fine. i know there are many women who were/are upset with having to have a hysterectomy, and i sympathize with them. However, for me, this was the best thing ever and I felt almost normal within the 6 weeks. You will need some kind of help for the first 3-4 days, as you will be very tired. Best of luck to you!
