Bowel cleansing fears!!!!!

Hi, my surgery is this friday and tomorrow I start the cleansing with magnesium citrate and am terrified of this process. I have severe IBS and have spent days in the bathroom and in April did a two week every day Miralax drink only to end up bleeding rectally by the 8th day. Does anyone have any tips on getting thru this? I'm supposed to start it at 6pm and am afraid I'll be up all night sick as a dog. Any hyster-sisters with any adivise?? The pharmacy was pretty good, they all smile when you pay for it and say just go for it. I'm open to any suggestions, helpful tips, anything at all? I'm more upset over this process than the actual surgery.

Bowel cleansing fears!!!!!

Hi Stacy!

The two best tips I have read on the site are to mix the solution with an ice-cold beverage like ginger ale to make it less awful to gag down, and to have a supply of baby-wipes handy for using in the bathroom.

My heart goes out to you, as this was one of the worst parts of my hysterectomy ordeal, too.

Many s to you,

Bowel cleansing fears!!!!!

I too have IBS and had to drink 2 bottles of that stuff.
I have 3 suggestions for you:
1.) Start around 3pm or else you will be up all night in the bathroom and still pooing while getting ready for surgery!
2.) Mix this stuff with OJ!!! It kills the nasty taste!
3.) Use baby wipes on backend or else you will be RAW!

I went through this on Dec 5th preparing for my 6th of Dec TAH! Good luck with the surgery and recovery....I willbe sure to keep you in my prayers!

Bowel cleansing fears!!!!!

I had to do the same thing and started at 4:00. I did the lime and chilled it. I just drank it in two large gulps. The worst thing was I started hitting the bathroom that morning and did not think I was going to make it to the surgery center.

I am sorry about your IBS, I don't have any advice for that.

Good luck, I hope it goes well.

Bowel cleansing fears!!!!!

Do we all have to do this? Yuck! I've had to do it twice before for a barium enema and a colonoscopy and I hated it.... Nothing to do but grin and bare it I guess.... and keep a candle lit in the bathroom

Bowel cleansing fears!!!!!

My surgery is Jan 11,2006 and on th 10th I have to start my bowel prep at 9:00AM At 9 I am to take one tablespoon of Fleet phosphosoda in a glass of clear liquids. Repeat two more times. I am to repeat the same thing again at noon. Than at 1:00 PM I am to take four Dulcolax pills.
I have a feeling I will be spending most of my day in the bathroom. Not looking forward to this at all.
This just adds to the nervousness before the surgery.
I am having a TAH plus alot of other repairs because of prolapses.

Bowel cleansing fears!!!!!

Unfortunately, I've done this three times now (once for fibroid removal, my TAH and then for a colonoscopy). It was the worst part of all three procedures!

A few more suggestions ...

The first time I went thru this I ate regular meals up to the time it was to be done. The second & third time I cut back two days before, started on soft food and lots of liquids. The day before I was to do the bowel prep, I stayed away from solids completely, did jello, broth, that stuff. The second and third one were much easier b/c there wasn't as much there. I'm not saying they were a breeze, but they were A LOT EASIER than the first.

I used Ultra Lotion Kleenex and then the baby wipes. The Ultra Lotion Kleenex was so soft and felt very comforting.

Also, I used Prep H. For the few minutes between times sitting.

Good Luck!

Bowel cleansing fears!!!!!

I've found the magnesium citrate to be more pleasant than some of the other stuff I've had to drink. Chilling it helps alot. I've not had to mix it with anything, just poured it in a glass and drank it down. I did find the plain one to be better than the cherry flavored. I also haven't had as many unpleasant side effects with the citrate than I did with some of the other stuff I've had to use.

Best wishes on your upcoming surgery.

Only do it if your own doctor instructs you to do so. Don't do a bowel prep unless instructed. To do otherwise could cause your surgery to be postponed.

Bowel cleansing fears!!!!!

Thank-you so much!! The candles are ready, I've got wipes already from using them with my IBS (which is terrible today so maybe there won't be alot to lose tomorrow) and some new magazines that will be labled for the bathroom and I'll replace at the hospital with new ones for after the surgery. My bottle is chilling now. I will plan to start earlier tomorrow and go very very lightly prior (picked up jello, have sprite on hand and water to drink). I just want to try to sleep the night before and not be up in the bathroom or still be going before I head to the hospital. "I can do all things thru Christ who stengthens me" so I can do this!! This too shall pass!! Stacy
