Getting sick and surgery is tomorrow

I started getting a sore throat yesterday and today its pretty bad. My friend told me they wont do the surgery if I'm sick. I called the doctor's office and they are closed today and wont open till 9am tomorrow. Now I am not sure what to do?? Is it most likely they wont do the surgery? I dont want to go through the whole thing of not eating after midnight etc, suffering with what I think is a cold and not taking any medications thinking I will have the surgery and then it only being postponed??

Uggh what a time to get sick. I wanted this over with.

help for sick

HI, I felt like I was coming down with something yesterday and I took "Airborne" which I always have on hand. Today I feel great. I don't know if you've ever used it, but it really does seem to work at the onset of a cold or such. Worth a try. Then have tea with lemon and honey. Good luck tomorrow, my surgery is Friday. We will be fine.

Please don't take anything until you talk to your doctor. If you can't reach your doctor, go to ( or call ) the Emergency Room and tell them your situation. They may be able to reach your doctor, but in any case will be able to tell you what you can or cannot take.

I've used Airborne too, and it's a lifesaver.... HOWEVER it has lots of vitamins and herbal extracts, etc. in it that may not be safe right before surgery. I agree -- call someone and find out for sure. In any event, lots of and hot water with lemon are the order of the day for you! I hope you're feeling better soon.

I had a sore throat last Thursday also. I was afraid they would postbone my surgery also. Gargle with warm salt water. That won't hurt anything for the surgery. I am 99% better. My husband has it really bad so I told him he wasn't allowed to kiss me today. I don't want to be reinfected overnight with his germs. I still have a slight tickle in my throat, but I don't think I have anything that will stop the surgery. Drink lots of juice enriched with vitamin c. I had some ginger and orange tea that was really nice on my throat. Good luck!!Hugs! Best wishes!

Yep, gargle with the warm salt water! Are you running a fever? If you have an elevated temp, I would call to see if you can get an on call dr. or your dr.'s answering service and find out what to do. You could just have sinus drainage. It can make your throat so sore and raw. Also, stay away from dairy, cheese, etc. It can make it worse! Good luck!

My surgery was supposed to be done on 12/27 but was cancelled because I was running a fever. It was over the holiday so I couldn't reach anyone prior to going to the hospital. So it was only about an hour before the operation that is was cancelled. I did the bowel prep too. It has taken me several days just to feel better. I think I was exhausted from all the preop stress too. Definitely try to reach your doctor before going to the hospital if you can. Good luck.

I had a cold and sore throat a week before my surgery. When I checked with the doc's office, they told me that unless I had a fever and/or trouble breathing, the surgery would go as scheduled.

Hope you're feeling better. Good luck with your surgery.

Hugs.

If all you have is a "sore throat" don't worry. You have to be pretty sick for a cancellation. They are more concerned if it gets into your chest, that might be trouble for your breathing.

Thanks everyone for the kind replies. Right now I feel nauseous and pretty sick. I got a hold of the doctor by calling the emergency line. He said like meatball said that if its just a sore throat and not in my chest they would still do the surgery. He also said it was most likely a viral and no sense in starting antiboitics now.I feel like I have a fever but have been taking Tylenol.

I pretty much feel like crap
