liquid diet ideas

Hi! I love this site, it has helped me keep my sanity while waiting to have my surgery. I am scheduled for next Tuesday the 10th to have a TVH. My doc wants me to start a liquid diet after lunch on Sunday.
Does anybody have any good suggestions as to what to buy to survive on that will fit into the 'liquid diet'???

Thanks in advance!

Hi, I had the same as you, but I didn't have to do a liquid diet. However, I did feel it would be beneficial(which it was). For 3 days prior to the surgery I ate alot of soups with crackers, applesauces, juices, soft foods. Alot of "alkaline" foods. I did not eat alot of protein, or dairy at all I didn't want a colon that was too packed. That's just what I did and it worked fine. Good luck.

I was on the liquid diet for 48 hours prior to my surgery. It went really fast for me. I worked both days. Keep busy and sleep if you can because then you don't think about food!

I ate/drank popsicles, broth, crystal lite, soda pop, tea, jello.

Hi Snigglet!

Like you, I was required to be restricted to a liquid diet before surgery. I suggest getting a couple cans of "high quality" beef and/or chicken broth, apple juice, ginger ale and gelati or sherbet.

Oh, the last few days before surgery drove me nuts! The day prior to surgery is when I started my liquid diet. That day I was also required to do a full bowel prep- so I didn't mind the liquid diet. My nerves were so bad I didn't feel much like eating anyway.

Broth, pop, juice, Jello, and popsicles are what I ate.

I stayed on the liquid diet for a few days after getting home from the hospital too. I didn't feel much like eating, and wanted my BM to be easy going. So you may want to have a little extra for when you get home.

Try to keep occupied as much as possible in the days leading up to surgery. If you have nothing else to do, make up some suppers and freeze 'em for use after you get home.

TAH & BSO due to large ovarian cysts (left one the size of a basketball) with cancer scare. Pathology reports came back as "low malignancy potential". Vertical incision.

I remember when a friend was doing a liquid diet before a colonoscopy she had Jolly Rancher gelatin, only she couldn't eat the red because of the colonoscopy. I thought that sounded great, of course I would probably eat the whole six pack

Sherbet is a good idea. I might do regular soda instead of diet because it fills you up more.

I like popsicals and Mtn Dew. After surgery, I didn't really have an appetite for a few days, so no problem there. Italian Ice is pretty good too.

I picked up my liquid diet survival kit today. I start my liquid diet/bowel prep tomorrow.

High quality bullion to have the flavor of a foodish item, clear gatoraid, a peach juice (no dyes), and jello. I found blue raspberry in the koolaid brand for lunchboxes and was pretty excited ... raspberry is red in jello and its not allowed. I also picked up pineapple flavored jello, instead of lemon.

I was told to drink lots of water.

I think I'm going to go pick up italian ices ... that'll take longer to eat than ice pops - wish I had thought of them while at the store.

After Surgery

After surgery I was on a restricted diet too (toast, broth, jello, juice)so it seemed like forever until I ate real food again. Hospital chicken, mashed potatoes and green beans never tasted so good!
