Well, just an update on me. I met with my new surgeon, whom I really like and feel 100% comfortable with. That is helping ease the stress a bit. My OR date is set for March 1st, all my pre-op (and more ultrasounds, yay) are Feb 15th.

It would seem she wants to tackle my hyst via laparscopy, seeing as she's never operated on a uterus of "this size" before (just over 17 cm, I thought it felt much like a cantaloupe) she's rather excited. Which is a good thing I hope. I know the healing time is drastically shortened and hospital time is next to nil (if I'm feeling ok that evening, I'm allowed to go home if I wish).

I can't get out of the cath, for fear of injury to my bladder during the operation if it fills up, but she's going to put it in after I'm asleep and take it out before I wake up, which still freaks me out, but not as much now as the thought of my dismembered uterus being pulled out through my vagina.

Ovaries are staying, cervix is going.

Have any of you had a hyst done via lapascopy? How was the healing? I know it's different for everyone, just interested in your stories.

Take care all

It's great that you like your dr, I think that's very important
I can't share experiences about a lapascopy hyst but wanted to wish you well. I had a catheter for a day after my hyst & it was my best friend Itwas good not having to get up to go potty. It was removed the day after ant I honestly didn't feel a thing.

Best wishes.

Hi Still_fabulous,

It sounds like you are having a LAVH (Laparoscopic Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy)or a TLH (Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy). I had a LSH, a ~sister~ lap surgery and I am stll very pleased with my surgery results.

Here is a H.S. link that goes over the different types of hysts:

Best wishes,

Mary

What is the average length of stay for a LAVH?

Hello,
I had a LSH/BSO and had very large, multiple fibroids. They were so large that my doctor advised me that it was possible they would have to abort the lap procedure and do the surgery abdominaly. I had been on Lupron injections for 2 months (he did not want to delay surgery too long because of my heavy bleeding) in the hopes it would shrink the monsters enough that he would be able to do the Lap procedure.

It worked! I was home the same day of surgery, in fact home just a few hours after surgery. Needed no further pain med (not even aspirin) by that evening and was moving around a little the same day.

I was cleared for all normal activity after 7 days, but still was very careful.

The most noticeable improvement jumps for me occurred at 3 weeks, 6, 9, and then 4 months. But everybody is different.

I feel great and am so thankful I had a lap procedure rather than any other method.

As far as the cath - I too was terrified of that. However they put it in and also removed it while I was under.

If you are afraid of anything talk to your doctor or other members of the surgical team . Most will work with you. I was amazed how comfortable everybody tried to make me. It was a good experience even under those circumstances.
Best of luck!

Thank you all for the hugs and warm wishes, as well as the information.

I'm really thinking the LAVH is the right way to go for me (wish there were diagrams of everything they do though).

I'll be meeting the surgical team on Feb 15th, so I'll be sure to write down and take with me any questions or concerns I might have.

There was a link I found on this site to an actual video of a LAVH. I am an RN so it did not bother me to watch it but it might some people. YOu know what you can handle.

I too am having a LAVH and am convinced it is the way to go for me. Usually only overnight stay but some do go home same day. Typically, most doc's I hear keep you overnight to make sure you are doing ok.

Remember, since your cervix is going not all work can be done thruough the scopes....it's still a vaginal hyst. with lap. assistance. My doc. said he does all his vag. hyst. this way because he can see better and it a little shorter recovery time.

Good luck and see ya on the other side!
