What is this throat thing they are talking about?

The truth is, I don't remember anything about the breathing tube in my last surgery! What I do remember is the anaethesti . . . gas guy telling me he'd prefer to put a "cathether" in my throat in order to get to my heart if things went wrong. . . it ended up going in my wrist. But my surgery was ON my throat, I had a biopsy of my lymph nodes in my chest, and the way to get to them is to put an incision in the base of the throat, and run a probe next to the trachea. Perhaps they did do the breakthing tube, too. I remember being given ice cream after and thinking it was the best got-durned stuff EVER.

Yep, as the other ladies said, any surgery performed under general anesthesia will be intubated... it's standard procedure. They just don't usually tell you about it, LOL. Try not to think about it, it will add to your anxiety.

Just remember that it's a very safe, standard procedure used every day with every surgery. Let the anaesthesiologist do his thing and just drift off into la-la land, you are in good hands

What is this throat thing they are talking about?

I had a horrible experience with an NG tube after a previous surgery. It didn't work and I woke up puking with a tube down my nose and throat AFTER abdominal surgery OUCH! The sore throat was unbelievably bad because of that. I remember pushing the button just because of the sore throat.

You won't remember anything about the vent tube.

I am glad an NG tube is not routine. I am keeping my fingers crossed I don't have to do that again.

What is this throat thing they are talking about?

in 2002 I have a cervical fusion . Was done from anterior ie, they went through neck . i have had many surgeries and never had anything but a slight sore throat afterwards. But this time I had diffcultly swollowing. It persisted for about 2-3 months. I was only able to eat soft foods. It was from trauma from the intubation(the tube down your throat) and from the retractors that held my throat open. The doc says b/c they go thrugh the throat for this surgery, the throat can be injured and it is a known complication of this surgery. In about 3 months I got better So complications can occur, I know, It happened to me. however, it was more form the retractors than the intubation, per the doc.

Like the sisters have said, you won't experience the breathing tube. It is standard for the procedure since you will be unconscious. The medical term will want to be able to control your breathing while you're under. When I woke from surgery I felt a very mild dryness in my throat which did not bother me. I wouldn't have known there was a breathing tube if I hadn't been told in advance. When I got to my room I was given ice chips. Those ice chips put me in heaven. They were the most delicious and soothing things I had ever experienced.

I'm glad things went well at your pre-op. Before you know it, you'll be on the other side with the rest of us. Then you'll look back to your pre-op days and realize they were the hardest part. You can't appreciate this until you're on the other side.

Best wishes and 's
