All I can say is thank goodness I quit smoking 4 years, 3 weeks and 3 days ago. LOL. Not that I'm counting.

No smoking after midnight ?

When I was doing my paramedic internship I got the pleasure(?) of watching a doctor try to place a PIC line in a patient (a pic line is placed in a vein usually near where they draw blood from and extends to the main vein near the heart via a very long but thin tube). They tried to do this right after they let him go outside for a cigarette (he wouldn't let them do it otherwise). After two hours of trying via multiple needle sticks, etc, they had to give up. When I talked to the doctor afterwards he said that smoking cigarettes causes all the vessels in your body to constrict, thus making it harder to get an IV, less oxygen and blood flowing to your heart (and everywhere else), etc. He said that they might try doing that again in a few hours, but he has always been frustrated that no matter how many times he tells someone not to smoke right before a medical procedure, and they do anyway, he then gets to deal with them when they're upset that the doctor can't seem to get an IV or something else in.

I'm sure there will be plenty of women who say they smoked before their surgery and it was not a problem, but do you really want to risk it?

The person who was next to me in preop was a big-time coffee drinker and had a narly headache from the caffeine withdrawal before the surgery. They came in and gave her some morphine for her headache caused by the lack of caffeine! So, some of you who have to go without your caffeine might ask about something for your headache beforehand if you end up getting a bad one.

No smoking after midnight ?

Thanks for the headache info on the caffeine. I hope if this does happen that they will give me something. I know the doctor doesn't want me to take my anxiety drug before.

No smoking after midnight ?

Good day Ladies ! I too smoke (more socially ) but I also tend to smoke more when I am nervous! Anyone relate to that?? I also suffer from caffeine migranes. Its true... but one thing I was told at my pre-op when I had a laparoscopy last January, was b/c of the mirgraines they said I cld take a tylenol in the morning. That was great news to hear. But anyone can make sure by asking when they go to have their pre-op done. I will be asking again as well !!
