Good food, bad food...

Any recommendations which food to avoid after the operation to ease gas pains etc? I guess this should really go into the post-op section but I need to plan now before going to the hospital and stock up the fridge and pantry.

Hi Annapurna:
Just a quick note, you are Pre-Op so all of your questions should be asked in Pre-op. There are a lot of post-op women who come to pre-op to help out. :smilie5:

Foods to avoid are things like, cabbage, broccoli, tomato sauce, pasta ... I'm sure there are a whole lot more. You should get a lot of great idea's.

Best wishes to you and I look forward to reading how you are over in Post-op as soon as you are able to let us know!

I ate an "alkaline" diet after. Crackers, soft stuff, soup, applesauce. You want to avoid spicy food and condiments. I didn't drink with a straw or anything carbonated. I didn't eat any food that constipates, like cheese. This should help you!

Remember to continue to eat foods rich in fiber. I had gas pains, but it reassured me that there was movement. Phazyme helps with gas and you can buy it at your local store. I snuck some into the hospital with me.

Here's what I avoided after surgery.... anything which caused me gastric stress. Nothing too spicy (no Mexican and Italian food, no matter how much I loved it!! ), and no broccoli, onions, or cucumbers. If it doesn't agree with you now, you'll probably want to avoid it for a time!

Here's another little tip -- be prepared for some foods you love now to completely "turn you off" after surgery. I stocked up on grapefruit and yogurt before my surgery because they are some of my favorite quick snacks, and I couldn't bear to even LOOK at them for several weeks after surgery! I wanted peanut butter toast and mashed potatoes instead.
