Any one else on LUPRON prior to surgery?

I am scheduled for surgery on 2 very large firboids on Feb 22 and was put on Lupron. My surgeon told me today that my mood swings and crying are NOT symtoms of lupron and i should perhaps see a mental health counselor~!! How insulting and uninformed is that! Any one else out there with a similar reaction to the lupron?? HELP!

Lupron shuts down all hormone production and puts you into menapause......so you are feeling this way because of hormone flunctuations. Silly doctor (I have another name I would rather use). I chose not to take lupron to shrink my fibroid because a few people I knew said they felt horrible and it did nothing to shrink theirs. SO if you can hang with what your feeling, hopefully you'll come out of it with some shrinkage! (Too bad it is not as easy as a man going into a cold pool!)

Any one else on LUPRON prior to surgery?

The Lupron shrank my fibroids by about half, but the shot wore off a couple of weeks before surgery and the tumors grew back even bigger, it seemed. I read that this could happen. Anyway, I had the emotional things at first, but that stopped when my doc gave me low dose BCPs as a little hormone replacement strategy. That is her standard procedure, and it didn't seem to interfere with the Lupron strategy and made it easy to tolerate. I did notice other effects, however, such as bowel looseness, and I did feel different overall. It was obvious when the shot wore off. I just felt different, like more positive. The BCPs are not enough estrogen to cancel out the Lupron.

Any one else on LUPRON prior to surgery?

My doctor gave me two lupron shots 2 months before surgery. Probably more would have been given but I was bleeding so heavily he didn't want to wait too long to perform surgery.

I am very, very thankful for those Lupron injections. They shrunk my huge fibroids just enough that I was able to undergo laproscopic surgery. Without the lupron it would not have been able to be performed. If you are a candidate for LSH surgery I can recommend it highly.

The lupron shots actually had a very calming effect on me. About the only thing I noticed physically was hair and skin became pretty dry quite rapidly.

The Lupron did slow down my bleeding temporarily, but it started up again and I was given extra prescription of another medication to help slow the bleeding down.

I felt pretty good on lupron and by it shrinking my fibroids made my surgery probably alot better than had I not been on Lupron.

Everybody is different.
Good Luck

unfortunately, my fibroids are enormous. One is 8.5" in diameter, the other is 5.5" in diameter. I think despite the Lupron i will end up with a supra cervical hysterectomy < SCH? >.....Thanks for the info, I do feel better hearing from others on the lupron effects!

Any one else on LUPRON prior to surgery?

I did the lupron shots and didn't have the emotional side effects that I can remember. I was sweaty at night, but I think I was so releived that I was not in pain everyday from the endo that I didn't care about everything else. I do remember getting extremely paranoid and exageratedly worried about everything the first three days after the shots, but who knows what that was about.

Just a note,,,,, when the shots wore off and my period came back, I was more miserable then ever. Lupron certainly gave my body a break but it was not a cure.

I too was on 6 months of Lupron shots (for endo), which had a calming effect on me too, almost euphoric compared to how I was before! I gained a few pounds during that time, but since my 6 month run ended, I have gained more than 20lbs and the doctor says we can't wait much longer and has now scheduled me for a TAH in February. Since that time my stomach has ballooned out, I've gone from a size 6 to a 14 (in the matter of a couple months!) Elastic truly is my friend now!!

Any one else on LUPRON prior to surgery?

I have over 20 fibroids in my abdomen with the largest the size of a grapefruit. My doctor put me on lupron to shrink the buggers for a possible vaginal hys, but it didn't work. I passed out twice while on the injections. I became an emothional wreck (couldn't reason through situations, cried and was paranoid), and started hemmoraging after four months. My doctor checked me and my fibroids grew! Surgery was scheduled within two weeks (was supposed to be tomorrow) but had to be cancelled for a week until I consulted with a hematologist.

I would never take it again.

Good luck!

Any one else on LUPRON prior to surgery?

Hi wickdnice:

As we all are different I'm finding we all have different reactions to the shots. I had my first shot a month ago and asked around as to how soon the effects (mood swings and hot flashes would kick in) and was told immediately and that I would be quite cranky...so far my side effects have been humming and singing under my breath, after christmas it was tunes from the radio, and my hot flashes are limited to a sweaty upper lip and sweat above my left eyebrow brought on by stress, steaming hot soup and coffee & baileys. How random can that be? Second shot this week.

Your surgeon needs to read the side effects of the drugs he's prescribing and have a solid kick applied to his backside. You can point him to Lupron.com to educate himself about possible side effects and then ask again what he can do for you or maybe consult your GP.

One thing to note, I asked my doc about add back even low dose and he felt it would prevent the lupron from doing it's job of shrinking the fibroids.

Hang in there and imagine that solid kick it'll give you something to grin about.
