Vaginal hysterectomy and catheter?

I have been so caught up with all of the other "stuff" in relation to my surgery, that it never crossed my mind to consider the catheter. How is it with a vaginal surgery? I know you have to have a cath in, but how long does it stay in? With my c-section, that was my least favorite part, and I was a complete pain in the butt until the nurse took it out the next day.

Does it stay in overnight, or do they take it out pretty quickly? I'm guessing the sooner you can get up and move around the better, so I am hoping they take it out soon. Another thing to think about......

Vaginal hysterectomy and catheter?

Isn't it stupid that I'm worried about the cath? With everything else going on, I'm stressing about it. Were you able to get up and walk around with it still in, or do you have to wait til it is out?

I know it's crazy to worry about something so small, but I can't help it

Vaginal hysterectomy and catheter?

They took mine out early morning following surgery. Prior to that, I had no desire to get up and move around. My surgery ended late afternoon so I would venture to say I had the catheter in for about 14 hours. I know that I didn't want company when I had the catheter in, there was something about it that grossed me out.

Vaginal hysterectomy and catheter?

Hi Jessica,

I had a TVH and didn't have a catheter. Of course, my bladder was emptied during surgery by catheter, but I didn't wake up with one. It a question to ask your doctor. Mine was just one of those who didn't require it. I was able to get up and go on my own about 4 hours after surgery.

From what I've read here, if you do have a catheter, it will probably be removed by the following morning.

Best wishes!

Vaginal hysterectomy and catheter?

I had a LAVH. I had read that walking helped with the gas so I was determined to walk as soon as I could. I hooked the catheter bag to the IV pole and took a little stroll a couple of hours after I got to my room (in the evening). The next day, I took several walks with the catheter still in.

Just remember, you have to walk back the same distance you walked forward

I was really freaked by the idea of having a catheter too but it wasn't that bad.

I had a tvh and I did not have a catheter afterward. In fact, I got up almost immediately and went to the toilet. No problem, no weakness or anything.

Thanks, everyone. I know it's ridiculous to worry about it. If I have to have one, I will just have to suck it up and deal with it. Hopefully, I won't, but I will just have to wait and see. Thanks to everyone for sharing your experiences. I have my pre-op appt on Friday, so I will ask then. I won't be seeing my doctor, but I'm guessing someone will have some answers for me.

Vaginal hysterectomy and catheter?

The first cath I had was very upsetting for me as I was awake when they put it in. After it was in, I was fine and glad it was there (had it for two days with no problems). The next week I was rushed back into surgery but this time I crossed my legs and told the nurses that they could either drug me first or try and get my legs uncrossed, whichever they thought would be easier. They laughed at my determination and decided to drug me first.

I had a cystoscopy done. That's where they feed a camera up into your bladder through your urethra to check things out. They did a little topical numbing at the opening there, but I didn't feel anything even with that!
