Incisional hernia Vent

I had a TAH in October 2004. I seemed to be healing okay the first couple of weeks, then chased my kitten who was heading out the door and felt like something popped. Stayed in acute pain since then, told the doctor at three weeks, she said to wait and see until my 6 week check up, okay, go in tell her I'm still in a great deal of pain, particularly on left side of incision (I had 3 previous c-sections, so i figured I knew about how much pain was reasonable). She said, oh maybe you're constipated ! Went back 6 months post op, she eventually did an ultrasound (lasted about half a second)sent be to a gastro-intestinel person, who did a coloscopy, who sent me back to my g.p. who sent me for a CT scan (normal) who sent me to a surgeon, who was going to brush me off then felt around while I was standing and realized it was a hernia. All of this running around took about 8 or 9 months (HMO's). I had been in constant pain, unable to sleep, hard to work, barely able to function at home for over a freaking year and my original surgeon couldn't figure this out ???
So I had the surgery (open, 3 or 4 inch incision- said it was a large hernia) last week. Not as bad as the hysterectomy, but definitely still painful surgery.

You may have still been swollen at 6 weeks post op,and not showing a hernia. A doc told me it was more difficult to detect hernias in females. Still, your doc didn't seem to take your pain seriously.
I've had 2 hernia repairs. The first was worse than a
c-section. Pain was intense, and lasted for years (no kidding!) but I wasn't in pain
before the surgery.
Anyhow, hope the repair was the cure for your year of pain.
Keep us posted on the results

I had TAH 1/14/05 -- surgery for incisional hernia also, on 9/14/05--
same experience in not understanding the pain for months, then the hernia was visible (after a few coughs) - dx immediately and went for one night stay in hospital; the hernia was worse then they thought and put large mesh reinforcement. Today I still am uncomfortable, but doctor explained it is from the mesh. How are you feeling now. I'm wondering - did anyone else have mesh; and can I still have the hernia? Lower back pain, can't stand more than couple hrs? after hernia surgery i was only off work 2 weeks. Good news is I've lost10 lbs.
