Bio-Identical -can i get a script ?

When i get the green light i want to start bio-identical hormones. My OB office said that insurance most likely will not cover it and they are expensive. My question is --can i get the Dr, to perscribe a commercial bio-identical hormone like Estrace (Estradiol) and Prometium in the lowest strength? That way i can see how my body handles it and go from there. Are those brands to your knowledge available at the regular Pharmacy?

I get my progesterone (balancing cream) through Arbonne. The others I don't know about. I get a rx from my NP. She approves of my Phyto Prolief Balancing Cream so I stick with it since I get a discount.

Bio-Identical -can i get a script ?

Hi sruendo!

Yes, those are readily available from the regular pharmacy, and not a bad way to go, in my opinion. Some women do very well on those bio-identicals.

I'm currently using a combination of bio-identicals from the regular pharmacy and the compounding pharmacy. It's great to have options!

I think it's worth calling your insurance company to find out if compounded hormones are covered. Mine are covered! Some can be persuaded to cover them if they don't already offer that benefit. It doesn't hurt to ask!

Good luck to you!

You can get bio identicals from a regular pharmacy. There are also compounded bio identical hormones available from a Compounding pharmacy. Prices can vary, but if you shop around you can find some that are not that expensive. I use compounded hormones in a cream form, and I pay $18 for progesterone and $25 for bi-est. They do last me longer than 30 days.

Climara and Vivelle Dot are also bio-identical estrogens that are available at I would say most pharmacies. Prometrium is bioidentical progesterone available in 100 mg and 200 mg oral capsules manufactured from a drug company. Testosterone is the only horomone that doesn't have a bio-identical form available from drug companies. You can get it as a compounded cream, drops etc.

I started on bio-identical forms with Climara patch and Prometrium capsules. When I wanted to add testosterone, I switch gyn's to work with someone who was more open to prescribing compounded hormones because I didn't want to take a synthetic testosterone.

My .

Blessings,

onelady4ben,
If you go to the following site and type in your zip code, you will get a listing of compounding pharmacies in your area. Call the nearest one and ask them what doctors work with them to prescribe bioidenticals, or are very knowledgeable about hrt. They would be happy to give you some names. That is how I found my doctor who prescribes my Triest. Here is the site:

Oh, that is much easier. Should be no problem in Boise. We don't have any around here so I had to find a zip code further away to find the one I use. They mail my stuff to me and are so nice, especially when I thought I OD'd on testosterone LOL

Im not certain if this is what youre looking for but this link is where I went to compare the montly cost of various hormone replacements. Im getting all of my 'ducks in order' before my hyst so that I can tell them what I want as far as hormones (Im leaning towards the Vivelle dot patch) and I see the cost of the Dot patch is not more than a lot of others.
