Enlarged Uterus
Hi,
When I had my ultrasound and they said that I had an enlarged uterus... I didn't know what to think, and blamed it no the darned old HUGE babies I had.. but I see where many women on here have had this... What exactly is it? Obviously it's a uterus that's enlarged, but why would that cause problems? Is it not so much that it's enlarged, but more 'why' it's enlarged? Some people have bigger hands than others, but doesn't mean there is a problem.
help in understanding 'why' an enlarged uterus is a diagnosis would be helpful to a future LAVH'er.
Thanks in advance

Enlarged Uterus
An enlarged uterus can be caused by fibroids or adenomyosis, which occurs when the cells that normally line the uterus actually get into the muscle tissue of the uterine wall. This happens in women who have had full term pregnancies. It's like having endometrosis inside the uterus. An enlarged uterus can cause bowel and bladder problems, among other things. Since it's so much bigger than normal, it puts pressure on surrounding organs. This can cause painful intercourse, too.
Has your doctor said how much bigger than normal your uterus is? Mine is at least 3 times it's normal size, and it's full of fibroids.

My doctor didn't tell me how much larger it is than 'normal' but on the ultrasound information where the tech did his written observations it says that it's 9.9 x 4.9 x 5.2 with an estimated volume of 141 cc. It also goes on to say that "there is a linear midcavity uterine echogenicity that measures approximately 1.1 cm in thickness. There is slight heterogeneous of the echo patter of the uterus but no focal uterine mass is evident.
Just a bunch of fancy words to me. My doc did a D & C and said he didn't find any fibroids, which he expected to by the size of it.? So heck, I don't know.. but if it does cause bladder/bowel problems, then I'm glad it's coming out because (and this may be too much information) but I dont have regular BM's. There are times I can go 5-7 days without, and I have to take laxatives to help, and I have to actually press on my tummy to finish pee'ing.

my uterus was 18 x 10 and the largest fibroid was through the wall and on the outside so a d/c would not do anything for the problem.
it's hard not to look for a reason, but is so much better to look forward to the cure
hope you find peace on your journey

Enlarged Uterus
Hi Twizz
Thanks for the info in your post, The Doctor said my uterous is enlarged too, it is 15cm and the average size is somewhere around 9 cm they said, I do have a fibroid in the muscle of the uterous, and a large cyst on my left ovary it is over 6cm. they want to remove everything except for my right ovary unless there is scar tissue from a small cyst that was ther about 3 months ago, but I guess it shrunk, that is good. however I do not know if it has scar tissue, if it does they will remove it all (both ovaries) plus the total hysterectomy (abdominal) They did a biopsy of the endometrious kind?? it came back negative. I however have never had kids, but still I have an enlarged uterous and a very small cervix. I wonder if there will be some weight loss with a TAH?
Take care and Thank you for your post.

It was interesting to me that I could lose so many organs with a TAH BSO and not lose any weight. Wouldn't you know it? Only a woman could have that happen!!!

Weigh loss *ha ha ha*... We are all going thru or have gone thru the same thing on this web site, and it comes down to the all mighty scale. I asked the same question... "Will my belly be flatter" ha ha!! Just got a giggle out of that.
My surgery is 7:30 am Monday Feb 27th... I should be in bed right now as I have to get up at 4:00am... but heck, I dont have to do my hair or my makeup. It's like I'll wake up in jammies, brush my teeth and leave

I also have and enlarged uterus. 2 times the normal size so from reading I see it must be about 18cm? I also have ovarian cysts that have grown and shrunk over the past 4 years. I don't know how big they are now. I wasn't told anything about fibroids or anything else.
I did ask how much everything would weight and was told 5-7 pounds. I would assume you would have to watch what you eat after your Hyst for any results. I was thrilled to hear it all weighed so much! I was thinking about 2 pounds.
I guess since we don't need our spleen and gallbladder he can also take all that out and I might loose around 10 pounds! Just kiddin.
Good luck on your Hyst. ladies!

Enlarged Uterus
Hello, this subject is also close to my situation as i've been told my uterus is 3 times the size it should be due to adenomyosis. I did try embolisation last year as this has proved helpful to some ladies but sadly it didn't help me. I also have terrible waterworks problems due to the size of my uterus (my bladder retains & causes constant bladder & kidney infections, from which i have ended up being admitted to hospital). Hoping hyst will solve this as i've run out of options now & really don't want to have to self catheterise, which i've been told is the other option
I agree losing a few lbs would be a great bonus!!
Will be thinking of you.
Michelle.
