Uncertain If I'm Making the Right Choice

Hello Everyone! This is my first post and I am really confused right now. Last week my doctor told me that I have a 15cm fibroid and that I would need a hysterectomy. It is scheduled for March 13. I have been tired, felt pressure in my lower abdominal area, had somewhat heavy periods and my legs hurt regularly, but I have not been unable to function. My doctor did not suggest any other options and I'm wondering if this is the best course of action for me. She assures me that I will feel so much better after the surgery. I'm wondering if this is really necessary. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Uncertain If I'm Making the Right Choice

Carolina,

I'm 31, I had huge issues with removing my 'womanly parts' but here's what I put into play. The family history of cancers and problems in the female reproductive organs was enough for me. Plus I'd already had problems in the past. So making the decision was easy for me. 15cm is a big fibroid. I had a cyst about 4 cm burst on me, and I thought I'd been shot it hurt so bad. I had an eval, and then some test, and then a 2nd opinion before I decided. If you are unsure, you need to have a second opinion. Read all you can read from this site. These ladies are speaking for personal experience... which makes the information you read True and from the heart...

You have to feel confident about your decisions...what ever that takes

Hi Carolina39,

to HysterSisters. It is always a good idea, when considering any surgery including a Hysterectomy, to get 2 additional opinions from unrelated Drs. You may want to read through Hysterectomy Options , especially Fibroids for some good questions to ask at those appointments.

There may be alternative treatments that will take care of your fibroid. If you try those treatments, and they don't work, you can still have the hysterectomy. If, however, you have the hysterectomy and are unhappy with it (it is a life-changing surgery) then there is no way to go back and try the alternatives.

Here is a link to ourOptions and alternative Success Stories and another one for theHysterectomy Options and Alternatives Message Board where you can post to get more support if you are not sure you are ready for a hysterectomy. There are others there in your same situation.

If you should decide to have a hysterectomy, then we will be here to help you prepare and recover.

S,
Kay
