what is a laprotomy?

Hi sisters,
as most of you know I am scheduled, after much he** to get there, for a laporoscopy a week from tomorrow. I have read alot of post where woman were supposed to have a laporoscopy, but it turned into a laprotomy (sp). Is this where they open you clear up again like they did for my TAH/BSO? I told my boss I would be off no longer than 2 weeks, and he is not taking that well at all. He will not be happy if things change! So, if anyone can explain the difference, I'd appreciate it!!!!! Thanks

Yes, the laparotomy is where they have to make a full incision instead of the small belly button type incisions with the laparoscopy. It is a much longer recovery time as you already know from your TAH/BSO. I hope you are able to get by with just the laparoscopy! Keep us posted.

Yes, laprotomy (sp?) is an abdominal incision. I had one a few years before I had the hysterectomy. I was in the hospital for 3 days and was off work for 4 weeks, probably should've taken longer, than went back part time for 2 weeks. When I had the hysterectomy the doctor went into the same incision.

Your doctor should inform you before the surgery if a laprotomy may happen. Just because one person has a laproscope scheduled that turns into a laprotomy does mean that your doctor has the same plans for you.
