Leg Cramps and Hormones Question

Not sure if this is the right forum to post in, but since I'm not in menopause, I didn't think I should post in that forum. Anyway...my uterus was removed, but I still have my ovaries. It seems that I am having a recurrence of Endometriosis and the doctors are trying to use hormones to suppress it. When they gave me a progestin-only (Norethindrone) I had horrible pins and needles and stinging in my hands and feet that was creeping up my arms and legs. It went away when I stopped the drug. Now I am on a combination Estrogen and Progestin birth control ring (NuVo Ring) to see if that will work. I have had some stinging and pins and needles, but it comes and goes, so has been manageable. The only thing is I am also having some leg cramps in both legs. I was having some trouble with leg heaviness even before I started the hormones, so I think it is something underlying that the hormones are just aggravating. Does anyone have any ideas? I also have Celiac so it is harder to absorb nutrients properly and I haven't been able to take my vitamins and calcium regularly for the past few months. Do you think this could be a vitamin or mineral deficiency? I just ordered some new gluten-free calcium that is supposed to be easy to digest and am trying to take my multi-vitamins again every day. Thanks for any advice.

Leg Cramps and Hormones Question

Hi Lisa You might try magnesium... it can be helpful with leg cramps, which are often caused by a mineral deficiency. It's especially important to take magnesium with your calcium, for a couple of reasons, not the least of which is that calcium can be constipating by itself. Magnesium counters that effect. The best combination is a 2:1 ratio - for example, I take 1500mg Calcium and 750mg Magnesium daily.

I hope this helps.

Leg Cramps and Hormones Question

Thanks, Linda! I just ordered some gluten-free calcium that has magnesium in it today!!! I'm hoping that will work, too, I just don't understand what the connection is with the hormones since it isn't as bad when I'm not on them. Argh!! Thanks for the info, especially about the ratios!
