Silly Question

What exactly does "BSO" stand for? I'm scheduled for a TAH/BSO on June 9th. I understand TAH, but not BSO.

Hi 825,

Not a silly question at all! A lot of abbreviations are used around here as the medical terms are so loooooonnggg... BSO stands for 'Bilateral Salpingo-Oopherectomy' (sp?); 'Bilateral' means both sides, 'Salpingo' is Fallopian Tube and Oopherectomy is removal of an ovary, so this means both ovaries and tubes removed. I'm having a TAH/'LSO' (only the left ovary and tube removed) as I already had an 'RSO' in '01 (my boss gave me the most confused look when she saw my disability paperwork and the procedure was written out longhand!). Here's a link to the most frequently used abbreviations:

You'll still see some that aren't on the list, but the ones listed are the ones you'll see the most. This is such a great place to come for knowledge and support - I've gotten quite a crash course in all this, and I've only been here a few days! Hope this helps!
