BIG stretch and is it ok?

Three weeks today was my surgery. For the last two days, I noticed (at the dawn of waking up) I felt the urge to stretch. It was only AFTER I actually stretched that I realized I had pulled something, or perhaps tore something, I am not sure, I just know that it hurt like... well, being cut with nothing to knock me out... My question or questions are: Is it normal for the body to want this stretch? Is there anyway to stretch and NOT hurt? And more importantly, Did I just mess up my recovery?

BIG stretch and is it ok?

Hi, I had asked the same question when I was about 3 weeks post op. It is such a strange feeling isn't it? I guess when we wake up our body just naturally stretches and we just never realized it before surgery. I had alot of pain in the morning like I pulled something out also. I would try and catch myself before I stretched, but it just happened. It was just very strange! I'm sure you didn't tear anything but be prepared that it will probably happen again. As your body heals you will not notice it anymore.

BIG stretch and is it ok?

OMG, I know exactly what you are talking about! It was like my body needed to yawn! In my first week home, I slept on the couch because it was easier to get up and down from. One night, I stretched a bit with on let and felt a sharp pain in my upper groin area of that leg. I took a few steps back in my recovery that night! It hurt so bad for a few days, I almost called the doctor, but didn't. It felt better after a few days. When i saw my doc at my 2 week check up, she told me that there are inside stitches that are very secure, but could be pulled and cause pain. I think that is what happened to me.
***I should stress though that you should contact your doctor if you feel pain. All doctors use different techniques and only he or she will know if you have done any damage. ***
My body went through that 'yawn' stage for a few more weeks before I felt like I could really stretch right. I'm at 6 weeks now and can do a real good one! It feels so good! Don't worry March Sisters! You'll be at that 6 week mark before you know it!

BIG stretch and is it ok?

YES!!! I have done the same thing several times! And you're right, I'm half asleep and have tightened my lower tummy muscles and caused pain before I even realize I did it. Now when I feel it coming on I get alert and I pull my legs up to my chest. That way my upper tummy and arms can stretch without involving my lower belly. It's so weird how we all can feel such similar things! Try pulling your legs up and see if that helps the stretch. Call your doctor if you are unsure but I've done this several times and after the initial aching tummy subsides I'm okay.

BIG stretch and is it ok?

This is so weird! This started happening to me too .. about a week ago. I'd wake up and I felt I had to stretch my tummy muscles, or they would just start stretching by themselves. I was wondering what it was ... never really had that feeling before.

What I do is just allow myself to stretch a wee bit in that area ... then stop, seems to work, cause now I can stretch much more and it doesn't hurt.

I thought I was turning into a cat!

But really ... what IS this???

BIG stretch and is it ok?

Funny, I've noticed in the past couple of weeks that I want to stretch too. I tried once but felt pulling and was too scared. I stretch my lower back by bending while sitting on a chair but can't do the real cat stretch or the downward dog like my dog does...LOL. I think stretching is the body's way of assisting muscles while they are healing......but I'm still too scared to do it. I have lots of belly button pain recently.

BIG stretch and is it ok?

WOW, this is so great to hear others are having these wierd urges to stretch like me. I am at 7 1/2 weeks now and don't have this stretch urge as much, but I thought maybe something was wrong when it did happen. It was like I had no control over my body and it just did what it wanted to do. Wierd! I was worried that I pulled something apart inside the first time it happend.
