too sick for surgery?

I've been battling a cough with sinus problems for about six weeks. You know those colds that feel like something is squeezing your nose and lungs shut, I am on third round of antibiotic, first two were the same and did nothing. I'm not sure if the one I'm on now is going to do the trick. I'm supposed to have surgery in 12 days. How sick can you be and they can still safely operate?

To top it off I am a smoker and haven't cut down at all, I'm so nervous about surgery that I'm somking even more, and it sure doesn't help getting air any better. I am very frustrated with myself.

too sick for surgery?

s joy

I smoked up to the day of my surgery, and never smoke again after that. Why not use your surgery time to quit ??

You don't have to be in perfect health for surgery, but you won't be allowed to have it with a fever or a chest xray that shows congestion. Give the surgeon a call and ask. I'm sure they can help.
