Finally had surgery, now constipation.. HELP!

Well I finally had my surgery due to endometrial cancer on Thursday the 20th. It consisted of an LAVH,bilateral salpingo, oopherectomy, with mesh support, and lymph node removal. Who knows what else, haven't seen the doc yet for post op. All I do know is the nurses in recovery were flabbergasted at how much work I had done. Now I am totally constipated. I am living on Miralax, and Philips Milk of Magnesia. Limiting my food for fear of bulking up, but drinking tons of water. Major pain problem when I urinate and feel like I am going to have a bowel movement. I am no baby here, but the pain is excruciating. I literally have to hold on to something and cry. I mentioned this to the Dr. and he told me it was due to the fact that the area where I have all my pain is where most of the surgery took place so there is a lot of stitching and support work there. Anybody have the same experience or helpful tips?? I am taking a limited amount of percocet, only 2 since I am home.

Finally had surgery, now constipation.. HELP!

Oh Meg, poor baby! It's amazing how terrible constipation can be. I think everyone's digestive tract is unique, but mine reacted quite well to fiber. Start off easy, like with the oatmeal and prune recipe that is somewhere here on hystersisters and some fresh apples. Keep drinking lots of water -- that's great. I read on another thread that Smooth Move tea has been a lifesaver for some -- it wasn't for me, I don't react well to senna, but you might want to try it.

The best news is that this painful post op state of messed up digestion won't last forever.

Please let us know how it goes when you get your pathology results.

Hi Meg! I'm sorry for your trouble because it just plain *****. The good news is that most of us have been through the same thing and we got through it - you will too! (That's meant to give you hope!)
I took some prune juice (yuck - like ipecac to me), bran cereal and apples and found that nothing really got things going for me anytime soon. Personally, I think the anesthetic has something to do with your body waking up again - plus - your uterus is the middle between your bladder and bowels so I think that it gets better when your bladder and bowels relate to each other and give you counterpressure.
Someone suggested raising your tippy toes and repeating idge and that does help. Also, I would roll up a towel and gently press against my inscision to help relieve some of the pain. It is important not to over strain. And walk - take a short walk everytime you eat, and in between it will help gravity help you!
I PROMISE WITH TIME IT WILL GET BETTER so hang in there! And if too much, a call to your Dr. never hurts. Good luck and Take Care!
M.

Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry this is happening to you. After my surgery I didn't pay close attention to my bowels and I got all stopped up (thought I was going to die). The pain is awlful AND I think that's when I got my hernia from straining so much so please try not to strain at all. My doctor suggested senokot which is sold over the counter and it worked for me. He also told me to try walking around inside the house said it helped get things moving inside and also helped the healing process. Please call you doctor if it continues. Let us know how you are doing.

Love and Prayers,
Donna

Hey Meg!

So howz it going now? Things any better in the constipation dept? Did you try the prunes? Are you getting in some walks? How's the rest of your recuperation going? When do you expect to get your path results?

You didn't get a lot of responses the first time, so I thought maybe a return to the top of the list might help that.

Here's to your recovery!

Finally had surgery, now constipation.. HELP!

Hi Genie,
Had success yesterday, am using my miralax, philips and eating a high fiber diet, tons of water. Funny thing is I have an actual hystersister, who had her surgery 4 weeks to the day before mine, and she is having major problems with constipation. She just called me close to tears.
Iget my path results on Tuesday coming, when I go back for my recheck. Just discovered during a comparison of incisions with my sister that I have one that she doesn't. I have a small abdominal incision in conjuction with the other three, can you think of why?

I had serious problems with constipation after my surgery, to the point where I can honestly say, I will never take a normal functioning bowels for granted ever again! It's amazing how something so little can make you feel so ill. I found taking soflax helped alot and when I was in dire straits, senna cot. I'm sorry, you can drink all the water you want, but I swear it never helped me at all! The nurse who came to see me at my house also suggested black licorice, which I jumped at. Good luck and I hope things "work out" for you soon!

Finally had surgery, now constipation.. HELP!

My second surgery was laparoscopic and there were 5 incisions -- one through the navel and four others. One was larger than the others and when I asked my gyn/onc why he said it was because they did a big adhesion repair there.

Tybear -- Is soflax a flax product? I use flax every day and I SWEAR by it for keeping things "moving" smoothly. I use whole organic flax seeds and grind them up in my (former) coffee grinder and put them on my cereal.
