Rare A-typical Cells

I went in for my 1st "pap smear" since my hysterectomy, I don't have a cervix anymore so it was more of a "vag smear". But the results came back as Rare A-typical Cells. I have had many a pap come back as a-typical cells, but haven't heard of Rare A-typical Cells.

First of all, whats the difference? and secondly has anyone else had that occur post op from their hyst?

Not worried, just concerned...

Rare A-typical Cells

I have had a few PAP's come back atypical since my TAH, one that said "..........with rare atypical cells". I asked my gyn if that meant rare as in "don't see this kind of cell very often" or rare as in "mostly typical cells but with an occasional atypical cell". He said it definitely referred to the second of those scenarios. That mostly there were typical cells, but that there were a few atypical cells. Not enough to call the whole thing atypical, but too many to just ignore and not say anything about. We did a repeat in 3 months and it came back normal.

Call your gyn and ask him/her to clarify the significance of this for you.

Haven't had any experience as I'm not due for a smear until my 1 yr. hysterectomy anniversary, but wanted to say how importmant your post is for women with hysterectomies to continue their annual screenings. If one hears they don't need any future smears due to a hysterectomy then they need to seek another Dr. Thank you for you posting and sheding valuable light on this subject. Take care!

Rare A-typical Cells

Wow this is scary...as I was just told by my surgeon this week that I did not need any more pap's. I will follow up with my family doctor.

Thank you.

Rare A-typical Cells

Yeah my Doc told me over and over and over again that I needed to continue to have annual paps. I guess with cervical cancer, there is a small percentage of women who have reaccurances and I don't want to be one of them. I have lost enough of my female parts I don't want to loose anymore! I'm kinda attached to them! LOL
