Swollen feet and ankles

Both my feet, & ankles are so swollen. I put them up and wake up w/ them still swollen. My feet get a bit sore and legs feel crampy. Is this normal?

Swollen feet and ankles

Did you have lymph nodes removed? If so, this is a condition called lymphedema. The lymphatic system pumps waste material (lymph fluid) from all parts of the body to the lymph nodes, where it is cleaned before returning to the plasma. If the system isn't working properly, for various reasons, then swelling occurs. This is esp true in the ankles, since the lymph has the furthest to travel there. The main way that lymph is pumped is through the movement of our bodies -- the lymphatic system doesn't have its own pump (like the heart for the vascular system), so it relies on us being up and around so that the muscles pump the lymph. People who are bedridden can get bedsores, or decubitus ulcers. This comes from the lack of movement and consequential non-movement of lymph.

For those of us who've lost some lymph nodes, our system is a bit impaired and needs extra care.

In addition to exercise, massage is a terrific way to get that lymph moving. Special lymphatic massage is often used as a means of treating lymphedema.

Anyway, you should ask your doctor. Good luck.
