Doctor called about abnormal pap smear...

Just wondered how many of you have had a hysterectomy (total with everything except vagina removed), and then years later have an abnormal pap smear?

My doctor called me yesterday, April 30, 2001, and said that my pap smear came back abnormal showing squamous cell changes and thinning of the vaginal wall. He said they didn't say it's "bad", but that I should have another pap smear done in three months, and then if it shows the same, he will do a culposcopy.

Has anyone had similar problems?

I hate to hear from the doctor....grrrr.... I take care of my totally disabled husband, and I didn't need to hear this. Cancer runs in my family very much. My sister had ovarian cancer at the age of nine. My dad died at 54 of a brain tumor, and my mom died of colon cancer. I am 52 right now. Had my hyst. in 1993 due to fibroids, adenomyosis, endometriosis, and polyps, and hemorrhaging severely.

Thanks for any answers or support on my question.

God bless you all!

Doctor called about abnormal pap smear...

I had my first pap (vault smear?) since my hyst today. I asked him about the chances of an abnormal results and he said something about "a virus" and that we have to worry for 5 years. I asked him if I had the virus and he said no and that my lesion was high on the cervix. I couldn't get the logic of that but let it drop. What I assume is that abnormal cells can show up in the vaginal walls as well as in the cervix. I know this sounds very unclear, but that's how my head was when I was talking to him.

I do know that abnormal cells can show as a result of trauma, infection, etc., so that's probably why your dr is waiting to do another pap in 3 months. Scary to have to wait that long, tho, isn't it.

Doctor called about abnormal pap smear...

Hi Elena, it is only 8 mths since my hyster, which I had for precancerous cells ( read below). My gyno. told me that it is advisable for all women to have regular pap smears after a hyster as there is always the chance of vaginal cancer particularly in women who have HPV ( human papilloma virus otherwise known as wart virus.) Usually there is a 3 mth wait between pap smears to enable the tissue to grow back so that a good specimen of tissue can be taken. Good luck

Doctor called about abnormal pap smear...

Mine have been okay so far, but my doc did tell me of how important it is to keep having my paps done. He said that vaginal cancer needs to be checked for and also any changes with my ovaries...I kept them but still swear that they are on vacation!

Abnormal smear too!

Hi Elena,
I've been checking the boards for anyone having the same thing I am and here you are! Just wondering if you've had your follow-up pap yet. I had everything removed a year ago and had a vault smear (vaginal pap) in May. Dr. called and said the abnormal cells were back and we would do another pap in 3 months. That'll be next Wed and I'm starting to get nervous. I asked "what now"? and he said we'll just watch for now and see what the next pap says. I'm 49 and thought after the hyst. I would be done with all the precancerous paps and colposcopy's etc. Anyway, let me know how you make out. My thoughts and good wishes are with you.

Doctor called about abnormal pap smear...

Hi, Christy!

I got the results of my smear back a couple of weeks ago. Thankfully, normal. But I asked my doc what would happen if they came back abnormal. He said if that were the case he would do a colposcopy and biopsy any questionable areas. After those results came back (if they weren't too bad) he could just laser out the cells. Anything invasive would have to be surgically removed. But that's why we go every 3 months--so if anything's there it can be caught early enough to do a procedure instead of a full surgery. But remember, so many things can cause an abnormal PAP, there is a good chance it will all turn out fine!

I know the waiting is hard. I thought I'd lose my mind waiting for these results to come back. Fortunately, my dear sisters here kept me calm during the wait. Good luck, and let us know how they turn out!

Thanks everyone! :)

I went for my second pap smear on July 19th, and it too, still came back abnormal. I have been using Premarin cream in my vagina, to help the tissue, according to my doctor. I have to use that twice a week. I have no cervix, and nothing else left. It was a TAH in 1993.

So, my doctor called me, last Friday, July 27th, and I am scheduled for a colposcopy next Thursday, August 9th. Haven't ever had one of those...

My question now is, has anyone else ever had to use the premarin cream for an abnormal pap smear, or "thinning of the vaginal wall"?

So, my nerves are a little frazzled, but not too bad, as I have so much other stuff that occupies my time, as my totally disabled husband, and my nine babies (kitties...hehehe...).

I will post after my colposcopy, and let you all know how that turns out.

{{Elena}} {{Christy}}

I wanted to add my prayers to you both for your upcoming tests. I sure everything comes back just fine. I know its so hard to wait for these tests and then wait for results.

Although, I know it has to be done in order to keep a very close eye on things, but its still hard.

Please let us know how it goes when you can. We'll all be keeping you in our thoughts and prayers.
