Pelvic Floor Dysfunction

Hi All,

I have not posted in quite awhile but am doing fine on HRT, etc. However, I now believe I am suffering from pelvic floor dysfunction. I DO know I have lower lumbar problems with L4/L5 and S1 discs. I have been given an epidural steroid injection at the L5/S1 and also an injection into the sacroiliac joint itself. They helped a little as far as sciatica goes. BUT...the pain I am having seems to be around the vaginal area...like muscle groups. Also, at times I will have what I call an anal spasm. I am sorry but that is the only way I know how to describe it. The pain is intense and I was told to go to PT and do water aerobics to help with both conditions. I also take Vicodin when the pain is unbearable and use a coccyx cushion just for good measure and pain relief. The thing is...the PT seems to worsen things. When I do the Kegel exercises I am in agony for days. I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this?! Thanks so much! Kathi

Kathi, have you seen a neurologist? It sounds like it could be nerve damage. I have ilioinguinal neuralgia and have pain that goes from my right hip to my groin. I have had 2 nerve blocks that haven't really helped. I am scheduled for a trigger point injection next. I was also having PT twice a week up until my recent prolapse surgery and found that I would also have more pain after therapy. Have you talked to the therapist about this? You could have her try myofascial relaxation. I did and it did help some.

Thanks Michelle,

Yes, I have seen a Neurologist but it was mainly for small fiber peripheral neuropathy. She has run an EMG and a QST more than once and both times it is negative for nerve damage or compression. This pelvic floor pain came on right when my lumbar started acting up. My pain management doctor says when the lumbar muscles tighten up to protect the spine, the pain can be referred into the buttocks, groin, leg, etc. I think what I am going to do is to contact my reproductive endocrinologist and have her check it out. It could be that the physical therapy person I am seeing for S1 joint dysfunction may have me doing the wrong exercises. I have to say that on Saturday I worked hard in water aerobics and may have overdone it. Sunday was pure pain and this morning I am feeling a little better. But thank you again! Kathi
