What 'kind' of pain is it afterwards?

I had TAH BSO 8 years ago. The initial burning pain when coming out of recovery was from the gas used to pump up the abdomen during surgery. Some of the gas got under my rib cage and it was extremely painful. The pain meds didn't touch that pain (which wore off after a couple of days), but the pain meds in the hospital (a demoral pain pump) did take care of the other pains (incisions and inside the lower abdomen). I don't do well with general anesthesia and I threw up violently, ripping both the stitches in my abdomen and the staples in the vaginal cuff. I ended up staying longer in the hospital than planned and received a blood transfusion. When I got home, my husband took good care of me and everything was going well until our dog took a flying leap onto the bed, right onto my abdomen. I think my screams were heard in the next county.

What 'kind' of pain is it afterwards?

Hi Wendy - I had TAH and woke up with a morphine pump! I did feel in some pain when I woke up but they gave me more morphine and I soon felt comfortable. As the day went on I kept pressing my pump and was just in and out of sleep but during the first night I felt really well and wanted to get up out of bed. I started experiementing with trying to move onto my sides. I moved as much as the pain allowed and by the morning after I asked them to take the pump down and I was up and walking straight! I actually found that the more you got up and walked the easier it was. When you've been laid a long time it's as if you are a bit stiff and sore so when you get up it hurts a bit at first but as you start moving it gets easier. Then we you lay back down it just feels soo comfortable. I went home on just Paracetamol and Codeine's and only took them for about a week. I know that by morning I would be tired and uncomfortable because I fidget during the night anyway and it is hard to turn onto your side as you have to do it all carefully and slowly. Sometimes I wouldn't be able to get comfortable properly and try to sleep as I was but it just makes you more stiff in the morning. So I would get up have a drink and some breakfast and walk about the rooms for a bit and then go back to bed. Then it felt like absolute luxury and I could manage to sleep a good couple of hours in comfort! Yes it hurts like ---- when you cough or sneeze and laugh but apart from that you just have to be careful what you do and if you are it's not so bad at all. It certainly wasn't as bad as I'd expected and at least you know what it is and why you are having it! Before my TAH I'd be in soo much pain with my periods and no painkillers helped me at all and after a few hours I would be crying and thinking I would have to go the ER because I couldn't stand it. I never did but I was on the verge so many times and I never felt like that with pain after my TAH. Afterwards you will have other issues to deal with like tiredness and boredom so please don't worry just try to relax and remember to look after yourself afterwards. Take care. x

What 'kind' of pain is it afterwards?

I'm 10th day post op- full meal deal- everything removed with vertical incision- staples removed May 25. I had a butterfly- for morphine to save being punctured each time. Ask for what you need for pain.
Gas pains were horrible. Once I came home controlled with Tylenol 3 every 4 hours. Now I've moved on to severe period type cramps that I control with Naproxen 2 x per day though I really need it more. Take what pain meds you can get.

Extra hint- I found I was so swollen with Gas that I neexed underwear 3 sizes larger to reduce any pressure on mid-section/incision.

Good luck

Yeah, I actually felt the pain from the pelvic gas was worse than the incision pain. My daughter just had laproscopic surgery for endometriosis and she too felt the pain from the gas was worse than her incisions. She only tylenol the first couple of days (the nurses said that was better for the gas pain) and then one vicoden after her first day really walking around (the incisions hurt that day from so much walking).

I agree. The pain from the gas after my lapro was difficult. Like a huge charlie horse either on my shoulder, my side and eventually right on my chest. It was difficult to get deep breaths. Each day it lessened, but meds helped the abdominal pains, not the gas pains. I just took enough so I slept through the worst of it.
