Wondering about bowel prep, etc.

Each person is different, for me my surgery was May 23, 4 days ago, I was scheduled for 3 p.m. so had to not eat or drink from 5:30 a.m and do an enema the night before. (That was worst part, my first enema, doesnt hurt just a lot of cramping.)

They just do not want you to go in constipated!

naejean, thanks for the info. This will be my first enema. My doctor just hasn't given me guidelines and as I said my pre-op is the day before surgery. Also I am fortunate to have reached 60 yrs. of age and have never had surgery. Hope you are well into your recovery. Thanks

Jenny, thanks for your reply. I have a white teacup poodle named Jenny & she is a joy. Did your dr. say anything about alchohol? There is a party I want to attend for a short time the night before surgery. Hope all goes well for you. Take care.

In regards to the alcohol, most Dr's will problably tell you not to drink the night before. It can mess up the anesthesia. Your Dr. may be different or want you to not consume any alcohol for a longer period. Good luck to you. The enema really isn't that bad. It is awkward if you have to give it to yourself, but definitely doable!

If it were me, I wouldn't drink alcohol the day before. But I don't handle alcohol well anymore. I don't want to be hungover the next morning & unable to drink water. I do not have to do any bowel prep this time...YAY (I think). For my other surgeries I had to drink a large amount of some stuff to clean me out & spent the evening before surgery in the bathroom. Sometimes they have you do that AND have you use an enema at the hospital.

Tina, i will stay with water or diet coke don't want to take any chances. Maybe I won't have to do an enema just drink that stuff I have heard really cleans you out. This sounds like torture....Good luck with your surgery and heal well.
