SEVERE back pain!

Why is this happening? The pain is getting so much worse - I don't know how I can hang in till the surgery. I called my doc and they'll call in something for me today (I see them tomorrow). But it was horrible last night, I slept on my heating pad, and I couldn't sleep the pain was just real lower back near tailbone thru my butt and shooting down my legs to my knees. I can't understand why the pain is so bad! I know esp. when my bowels are full, it seems to be pressing on the tailbone area and making it worse. But it just won't go away.
I'm here at work cause i have to be. i have to save my leave for my surgery, and you all know i can't miss even one more day due to sickness or pain. I know I'll have some relief soon, but I just can't stand this. Why is this happening agian?
Thanks so much for listening and letting me vent, sisters.
Love, Christina

SEVERE back pain!

Hi Christina
I hope the pain has eased up by now. I had my L4-S1 fusion back in Oct. I had nerve compression(central and foraminal) which affected both legs. I know what you are going through. Unfortunately surgery didn't get rid of the pain. I had many falling episodes post op due to nerve pain. Finally my NS put me on Neurontin, which was a Godsend. I had a epidural steroid injection just May 18 and June 1 to try to ease the n erve pain again. It is a viscious cycle. The second ESI did seem to help quite a bit, so far. I am having ongoing constipation issues, which I know doesn't help a bit. I think this is all related somehow, but no dr. seems to want to find the cause.
I suggest you get a pain management dr before your surgery. I wish I would have. The NS oe Ortho. surgeon just don't treat the pain like a PM will. I was 6 months post op before I finally had a dr. who would listen about my ongoing symptoms and would treat me. He calls it "failed back surgery syndrom". I don't regret having the surgery, because I had arthrotic facets removed and had the rods and screws and morphogenic bone stuff put in. I know my back is stable now.
Sorry for rambling. PM me if you want. I hope your surgery is a success !
Hugs
Peggy

Thanks!

Thanks for your response. I do have a PM doc - he called me in a 2 day supply of Lorcet 10 which knocks my pain right out, and I go see him today @ 2p.m. I can't wait for my surgery because I really think that will make things better.
THanks!
