Question about bowel prep before surgery

I have been told to have a Fleet Enema the night before surgery.

Since pain meds can cause constipation - has anyone else here who had the Fleet Enema only before surgery have suggestions on how to prevent constipation after surgery?

I had another prep but as far as constipation, I think it is going to take a few days for everything to get moving again. It took me about 3 days. i've never wished for a bowel movement so much in my life Lots of water, and lots of walking should help.

I just had the enema for my bowel prep. What helps is lots of water, walking and I took colase for the first couple of wks. Eating softer foods helps too. I also use the Benefiber powder that you can mix into anything. It is great, not gritty and you cannot taste it. I also eat an Activia yogurt everyday and I was surprised but it actually does work. Just make sure to get enough fiber with it. Be patient also. The nurse at my Drs. office said to consider how much I was eating before I paniced about not going. After I thought about it I realised I hadn't eaten as much as I usually do.

Yes please get up and walk the next day and I remember it did take till day three to have a bm. One of the nurses told me to mix grape juice with prune juice and drink that in the hospital and that would keep everything moving. I did drink lots of fruit juice and it did help. I also bought stool softners just in case but did not need them. Good luck to you.
