Pre-op appt. was today...(m)(scared)

Had a good visit with my ob today. I asked her a lot of the pre-op questions from the source here. I will be having a spinal instead of general anesthesia due to asthma. I'm scared to death. The thought of that needle going into my back is giving me fits! I requested sedation before the epidural so I won't feel it as bad. The space in my back is very narrow and when they push that needle in it feels like a cork-screw going in my back. And even the local anesthetic doesn't help much unless they use like five or six shots. That's what they had to do last time. I'm so NOT looking forward to that! I know I need to calm down and just breathe. But having a difficult time right now. If they give me the sedation first, it won't be as bad. In fact, I won't even remember it. My doctor said that's what she'd recommend. I just hope it works out that way. 6 days and counting. I wish to God the 11th was tomorrow!

I can't stand the waiting.

Katherine

I was given something to help me relax too. It worked very well - I could have been used as a dart board and would have probably have just giggled
The nerves that you're experiencing right now sound normal to me, a good many of us feel them when waiting for this surgery. Staying busy and nice long baths helped me a lot. I'll be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi Katherine,
A fellow asthmatic here I was given the choice and I chose general over the spinal. The spinal scared me tooooooo much. I take advair, flonase, singulair, clairiten and albuterol daily to control my asthma and I am classified as severe. I came through the surgery with no breathing issues !! I did ask that oxygen stayed on me until I was ready to let it go and I feel that helped. I know the anestesiologist wanted to do a spinal but I had never had one and was to afraid of the unknown. I knew I had my tonsils out as a child and was under general then with no ill effects so I chose that way.
Keep voicing those concerns to your doc. That's what we pay them for. Feel free to message me if you'd like to stay in touch with a fellow asthmatic hysterbuddy.
Good luck!!!
