sex and yeast infections....
Hi Ladies,
Ok...got another one for you all to help me figure out. I am now a month into my "natural" alternatives to hrt...I'm on dong quai and shisandra along with my huge array of other supplements. I'm feeling really good!! But...had some "fun" with DH and now I've got yet another yeast infection! ARGH! My Mother says that I could be allergic to DH's semen...I've never even heard of such a thing! But this is the third time this has happened. I pee before and after along with cleaning up after (yep...how wonderfully romantic...NOT!) and it still happens. I'm SO sick of this cottage cheese type discharge! I've even started taking extra acidophilus and a yeast cleanse tablet. Does this happen to anyone else and if so...any ideas on how to prevent it? My PCP says "this just happens with some women" and if I hear that one more time I'm gonna have to hurt him bad! Thanks!

sex and yeast infections....
If we're making things up, it may be your DH is re-infecting you, in which case maybe Diflucan for BOTH of you is called for. Back when I had recurring yeast trouble, the only oral drugs were nystatin (icky expensive and slow) and nizoral (toxic side effects) so treating the partner was not a high priority.
Another funky possibility that my doctor put me on 10 years ago (when I was on the pill and had back-to-back yeast) is intravaginal boric acid. "What?" you say. "Roach poison?"
Right, absolutely don't eat any. It's not safe to eat it.
What he had me do is put some into empty gelcaps (can get from GNC or a health food store) and insert one every other night for a couple of weeks, then once every two weeks. It acidifies the ph of the vagina, making it more hostile to yeast. You get a little watery discharge at first and may need a panty shield...but if you can get the current yeast infection under control with less time-consuming means (like vagistat or Diflucan), then maybe you could go right to the every-two-weeks thing.
It really helped.
I agree you shouldn't let your doctor get away with "some women just get that". I'm sure they do, but then some doctors just treat it. Otherwise some women just smack them in the head and get new doctors.

Denise,
Thanks! I've heard of the boric acid but never tried it...was thinking exactly what you said...roach poison up THERE?! And I've got a discharge anyway so a little watery one won't matter. I'm going to try it tonight...got the stuff this afternoon. And I loved that smack the doctor in the head comment...oh my...I SO want to do that!

Are you sure it's yeast?
Are you absolutely certain it's yeast? There is another culprit that could be at work here: bacteria
Bacterial vaginosis is one of the most common forms of vaginal infection and can be passed from partner to partner (don't worry -- he didn't catch it from someone else) Either one of you can catch it and the cycle begins! for this you must have anti-biotics.

sex and yeast infections....
I just wanted to chime in here to let you know that recurrent yeast infections can also be a signal of low estrogen levels. I was an estrogen queen all my reproductive life and never ever had a yeast infection. After my hyst (kept ovaries) my estrogen levels dropped quite a bit and voila yeast infections. It's also quite possible that you're getting them from DH if he hasn't been treated at the same time you have. I've never heard of the boric acid treatment. I'd have to check that with my Dr. before I'd do it.
Just my 2 cents,

sex and yeast infections....
Hello
I just wanted to comment on the yeast infection problem, I too have one infection since my surgery .I asked the dr and this is what he said to me..The lining of the vagina is thinning especially after a hyst as well with age..I am 30 go figure.I read alot about yeast, and I have found that eating yogurt does help, because of the active culture in it. Reaccuring infections are also a sign of a more serious problem in some cases, I was also told that wearing white cotton panties are the best for a woman., because moisture won't get trapped and using white toilet tissue is also suppose to help..Some things you hear are so wierd I know..Having an infection has got to be one of the most annoying thing to deal with..
P.S. I did think I was alergic to my DH as well..LOL..Hey that can happen..OH My dr said that in some cases a dr will prescribe antibiotics for you to take right after having sex or before sex..He did say that tends to help. PLease keep in touch and I am sorry I rambled on...

sex & yeast infections
Hello Ladies - I'm new here, just seeing what I might be in for. Had hyst. on 5/7/01, kept the ovaries, but now see that they may not 'kick in' after surgery.
Before hyst I had a period of time that I had several yeast infections. Dr said that it wasn't 'Honey'. What we discovered by ourselves, how can I be 'delicate' here, was that 'Honey' needed to be very careful about the type of toothpaste, when he brushed his teeth before intimacy and absolutely NO mouthwash, no breath spray. Me too. I found I was very sensitive to anything with alcohol any where near me. Sorry if this is too personal, but by being careful, it eliminated me having yeast infections every month. Not that this is your answer, but a possibility. Again, pardon me if too personal. Robin52

sex and yeast infections....
It could be bacterial I guess...are the symptoms the same or slightly different? I'm itchy, slightly red with small discharge...but what is coming out is lumpy like cottage cheese (sorry so gross!). The biggest thing is the itchyness (is that a word?) and I'm sore up inside my vagina. I too have to be really careful about detergents, perfumes, alcohol etc...never thought of toothpaste or mouthwash though...might have to be a little careful there too! The ONLY thing that I've changed recently is that I've started taking Dong Quai for my estrogen HRT. I went to a compounding pharmacist and he suggested that. I feel really good on it...except for this. I have NO idea if the two are related or not. My DD just wants me to take premarin and be done with it but that gives me headaches etc etc...you all know what it's like with HRT! Ok...now the weird one...I had yeast infections constantly while on bc pills etc...maybe I get them from too much estrogen?! Just more proof that we are all different I guess! This is just so irritating as I was just starting to feel good again! Thanks for all the advice/info! And thanks for letting me whine/vent <hugs>
