Me AND My Mother

Yep........you read that right. I am scheduled for a TAH,BSO,Vag Susp and A Rep Aug 7th. My mother is scheduled for the same minus the A Rep Sept. 11th. I was hoping to be able to help her after hers but not sure if I will be able.
I am frightened more about the ovary removal and 'bladder repair' than anything. I opted to have my ovaries removed because not sure what condition they are in...can't see 'em but after talking with my DH decided to just remove them no matter what to keep from having trouble down the road. I realize I will have the HRT to deal with..but feel that I probably will be in better shape. I am keeping a positive attitude about that..well.....to be honest I am TRYING to.
I have begun today preparing for the big day by starting my cleaning and such.....have MUCH TO DO!
I was wondering if anyone else has been in the position to take care of someone else so soon after surgery? I am not sure WHAT I will be able to do to help my mom.
suggestions?
Thanks so much.......I love this site!

Teresa

Me AND My Mother

I was/am in a similar situation, except I'm in your mom's shoes. My ex-partner had surgery a month before I went in for my hysto. She's still recovering from her own massive surgery, but came to 'babysit' me in the hospital. She wasn't in any condition to help me out of bed, except to offer a steadying hand, but she did plenty of other things that made a big difference to my quality of life while in the hospital. She held my hand when the vampires came to draw yet more blood, rubbed cocoa butter on various bits of me when they felt dry or hot, helped roll my bedtable out of the way when I needed to get up out of bed, and kept a watchful eye over me as I drowsed. She was there when I was at my most upset. These seem like such small things... but they were big in my eyes, and suspect similar services would be large in your mother's eyes as well. And also, ask your mom what she's worried about, no matter how irrational, and see if you can do specific things to help mitigate those worries.

I wish you two the bext of luck with your upcoming surgeries!

Hug to you, Teresa! My mom had her hyster 40 years ago, but I do help her pay her bills and look in on her each week. Most of her bills I now have on autopay, but I know I'll still worry about her.

Is it possible to find some extra friends or family to help you out? It will be an issue of organizing but I think you will need just as much rest as your mom.

I'm sending extra hugs!

thanks for the ideas. I never thought of it .....even the smallest of things can mean the most. When Mom had open heart surgery several years ago....I shaved her legs for her. She still talks about it to this day. Hmmmmmmmmm......maybe she will return the favor! :-)

Me AND My Mother

Really it is just me......she is having 'home health' come in to do her shopping and light cleaning though. I was mainly worried with her alone at night for the first few nights. She lives alone (my dad died 26 years ago). She takes coumadin therefore it scares me for her to be alone at night for a bit. It would be so easy for her to 'bleed out' quickly. At least I will be an 'expert' as to what she will need though after 'just' going through it myself. I will have to be careful .....probably won't be able to lift anything for her of any size cause of what I am having done.

Can your mom come stay with you and have home health come there? You guys could recuperate together and have companionship -- you know, someone to help you share those bon-bons with!

Also, perhaps you could enlist someone to come in from a church or even a civic group you belong to (or your bunco group, or whatever) but the fact that you two would be together, you could share expenses and then she is not alone - which would probably be a huge weight off her shoulders.

Best of luck to you both!
