pain upper abdomen near end of rib cage

After surgery noticed a bruise on the upper adbomen near the end of the rib cage didn't think anything of it, though wondered how I got bruised there. Now I have developed a slight swelling and pain that is worse when taking a deep breath or sleeping on my left side. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

The doctor looked at my abdomen after surgery she was mostly concerned with lower abdomen I don't know if she noticed the bruise. The bruise has since disappeared now it is just swollen and painful. I see the doctor on Monday and will asked. I was just curious what the heck would they have been doing in that region. Thank you for your quick response.

hello barbara, I read your post, and want to let you know I have had constant left side pain. also below my ribcage. It feels like it is constant stabbing and burning. I had my hysterectomy 4 years ago, TAH/BSO, and to this day I am not better. I have been on ocycontin 80 mg 4 -5 a day for the pain for the 4 years. I have been to every specialist and doctor, they are baffled as to what this is, and also why this area. Barbara, I also cannot eat. Anything I eat, even a small cracker sits in the stomach, at the very top and my stomach just starts to swell and swell by 5:00 p.m. it look like I am carrying triplets, that is how huge I get, and it is very very painful !!!!!So I have been basically this long on yogurt, and liquids as I cannot stand the pain......I still believe that it had to do with the retractors they used during the surgery, either they pinched my nerves, or severley damaged the nerves to my stomach, or cut the nerves somehow. I am still searching for help, it has been quite the journey for my self and my family. Very stressful, and a lot of pain. I get very at times...I just want a diagnosis, and accept this, what happened, and maybe move on, but I can't as I still do not know what he did to me!!!!Do you also get severely distended abdomen, or just the abdo pain, what side is yours on ??? Please rely and anyone else out there, that has been thru this, or similar, I am desperate for info!!! Thank you. Bonnie

I am so sorry to hear of your on going troubles. My pain is on the left side. After much of my own research I am thinking it has something to do with my spleen. It does cause more trouble after eating and laying on my side at night is difficult. It seems to be inflated that is the best way I can describe it. I had very little trouble recovering and I am anxious to see the doctor tomorrow to see what it could possibly be. I had the procedure done laproscopically so would clamps still be a factor in my case? Thank you for your post it is so nice to have this site. I will keep you posted and maybe some light will be shed for both of us.

BarbaraWi, they fill your tummy with gas for a lap. Maybe the gas irritated something there for you and is causing a reaction. Or maybe somehow they bruised you and it's still healing inside even though the skin looks better. Laps aren't pretty. The incisions may be small, but they get around inside and they are working you over pretty good to do it. I had one a few years ago and made the mistake of watching the video... ugh! It wouldn't surprise me at all for an incidental bruise to end up that high on your abdomen.

Let us know what your doctor says.

Saw the doctor today she thought it was a muscle. She didn't seemed concerned. If it doesn't get better or gets worse I will see my primary care doctor.
