Was Wondering...

From looking at the posts, it seems like many of you have had to do/ must do bowel preps before surgery. I just double checked with my doctor and nope, don't have to do it. Is it because I'm having a Lap procedure? I have never got to experience the "fun" of a bowel prep, but from what I have read I guess I should consider myself lucky. Just wondering how many of you did not have to do any bowel prep and if so, did you go ahead and start taking stool softeners before or right after surgery to help things along.

Whew! Did I mention how grateful I am for this site and the freedom to ask these kinds of questions?

Tomorrow is the big day. How are all the 8/23, 8/24, 8/25 girls doing? I think all the sisters are right on about waiting being the hardest part. I wish it was Thursday already!

s!

Was Wondering...

Hi fibroidhater - I had my LSH on 7/18 and yes, I had to do the bowel prep. My dr. wanted me to be cleaned out just in case there were some complications when she did the surgery. She told me about one patient on the table she had that she was doing a Lap procedure and the lady had to have her bowel repaired too because of a large fibroid that had wrapped around it. It just goes better to prepare from all standpoints. My dr. also had me start taking Senokot S (stool softener) the day AFTER surgery because your bowels are the last thing to wake up from anesthesia. Good luck to you! I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. The laproscopic is the only way to go in my opinion. Recovery time is so much easier.

Hi Veronica, Best wishes to you on Thursday. Waiting is the worst part I promise. As for you question.....thank goodness no bowel prep for me. I had read about it before hand and I expected my Dr to say I had to do it, but he didn't I just had the usual no eating, drinking, etc after midnight routine. Take good care and Thursday will be here before you know it. Best wishes! Melanie

I had a TVH on 6/6/06 and didn't have to do the bowel prep and I was very grateful for that. The only stool softner I had was in the castle the day after surgery to make sure I could still go. I was released after I went and I didn't take any at home because I didn't need them. Hope everything works out for you and good luck.

Hi Veronica,

I had a LSH and nope...no bowel prep. I just ate healthy before and after surgery and drank lots of water which I try to do anyway. And I had a daily fiber supplement. I had no problems with constipation or gas.

Best wishes,

Mary

Was Wondering...

Hi there,
I am scheduled for 8/25 and definitely getting nervous. lol. I wish it was Friday already so I could get this over with and stop worrying.

I actually do have the bowel prep to take. My Dr. explained it to me, he said since I have endo and it has spread to my colon and appendix, he wants my bowel cleaned out just in case. He is also removing my appendix. I think it's more just being prepared in case there are any bowel problems he has to deal with while he's in there. At least that is how I understood it. Hope that helps and best wishes for your surgery. I'll see you on the other side! Teresa

Oh my goodness, I just realized your surgery is tomorrow. I just posted a reply to you on another thread and never said a word! Sorry 'bout that. I do still love your screen name! I'll be thinking of you tomorrow.. good luck. As for the bowel prep, I am also scheduled for LSH and have to do one. I know someone who used the same doctor and had the same procedure and didn't have to do one.. go figure.

Nada Prep

Hi there, FH!

I'm scheduled for a TLH (leaving ovaries) on Aug. 29th. I don't have to do a bowel prep either. My doc explained to me that the bowel is left pretty much undisturbed during the laparascopic procedure. I'll be very interested to hear how your surgery goes and what your recovery time is like. So far I have communicated with only one other woman on this site who had a laparoscopic procedure like we'll have. The abdominal surgeries seem to be much more common. Despite this fact, I've found tons of helpful info here at HysterSisters. Best of luck to you and do keep in touch, if you wish!

First off, best wishes for tomorrow!

I had an LSH and didn't have to do the bowel prep either. Once I was eating solid food (about four hours after surgery) they gave me a stool softener. She also gave me a prescription for one and said to take it while I was on the Percoset as the perc can give you constipation. I stopped the Percs on Saturday, but took the stool softener through yesterday just because I was a scaredy cat about going and wanted to make sure the perc as all out before I went back to just me. I did twice a day while on percs per doctor instructions and once a day once I was off them.

Good luck again, I look forward to hearing how smoothly the surgery went!

Was Wondering...

I'm in Sweden and it seems the overall approach to this kind of surgery is different compared to the States and other places.

I had my SAH almost 2 weeks ago and no bowel prep (haven't even heard of that except on this site). I didn't really have any problems with gas (sure I had it but only on the first days after surgery and it wasn't a big deal). Had first BM 4 days after surgery (relief doesn't even begin to describe it!!!) and since then my BM:s have been normal. Actually I feel totally fine - if it hadn't been for the fact that I'm not as flexible as I normally am I wouldn't even think I recently underwent major surgery...
Hang in there - as many have said in posts on this site - the waiting is the worst and once it's done hopefully you'll feel as relieved and fine as I do! :-)

Good luck to all of you with planned op:s this week! :-)
