Climara Patch

Hi Mary!

I'm sorry you have had problems for so long. Is the patch you have the Climara brand or did your pharmacy give you generic patches? Generic patches don't always stick as well for some women as the brand name patches. The generic patches are thick, large and flesh colored while the brand name patches are thin, and nearly invisible when applied.

Regardless of the patch type there are some steps to follow to have the best success at getting them to stick. First, you want to be sure your hands and the area where the patch is going to be applied are clean, dry and free of oils, lotions and powder. When I apply my Vivelle Dot I usually swab the area with a bit of rubbing alcohol and allow it to dry. I apply my patch being careful not to touch the sticky surface and after it's on my skin I hold it down with the palm of my hand for several seconds to be sure it's on good and tight.

I find that my patches stick best if I put the new one on before I bathe rather than after as my skin is much dryer naturally than it is when towel dried. If I do bathe first, I wait several hours before applying the new patch. On the rare occasion when my patch isn't sticking properly I smooth it back down and give it a blast of heat from my hairdryer to help it stick better. Also, I'm careful not to apply the patch in an area where it will be rubbed by clothing or where it will be creased from body movement. For me the best place has been on my rear end, about where my jean pockets hit. Absorption is about 20% better back there which works best for my estrogen needs.

If you try all of that with your Climara patch (or generic) and don't have success, you can ask your doctor about trying Vivelle Dot. Women have good luck getting it to stick and since it's changed every 3 1/2 days it doesn't have the problem of "running out" of estrogen before it's time to change plus it has to stay on only half as long as the patches which are changed weekly.

If all else fails, there are many other estrogen choices. I know it's frustrating to find the right one at the right dose but hang in there! It can be done!

Climara Patch

Thanks for all your helpful info!! I am on the brand name patch and will certainly try all your suggestions! Could you tell me about the Vivelle Dot...is it smaller than the patch? Easier to keep on?

Climara Patch

I'm on Vivelle Dot 0.1, which is the highest dose. The patch measures about 1" x 1 1/2". The lower the dose, the smaller the patch. I've never tried Climara so I can't compare the two personally but from years of reading these message boards the consensus seems to be that women have the best luck with the adhesive of Vivelle. Of course there are always exceptions and you won't know if Vivelle is better for you unless you give it a try. Maybe your doctor has some free samples you could try before committing to a month's worth of product.

Climara Patch

Mary,
When you call your doctor be sure and specify "Vivelle Dot" as there is a Vivelle patch and it is different than the Dot. It's my understanding that the Vivelle is a larger patch, much like the Climara. Just thought I would give you a headsup.

Climara Patch

I have the Climara patch (name brand) - and find that it sticks fine - as long as I put it in the right place on my body. It seems to prefer the back of my hip.

When I tried to put it any further back (toward my spinal column) - it doesn't stick.

I have also found that I can go from 5-7 days on the Climara patch. I talked with my dr about this and he gave me an Rx for enough to go every 5 days if needed.

I think I'm doing ok on it.
