Is the epidural necessary?

I'll be meeting with the anesthesiologist on monday the 18th for my pre-op. I've heard some women mention that they had to have an epidural. I never had one with childbirth because I wanted to do it all naturally.

Is this a necessity or just an option? What exactly are the side effects from the epidural?

Is the epidural necessary?

I've had many surgeries and only general anaesthetic - no epidurals.
I'm only having general this time too.
Apparently, the epidural aids in pain relief immediately after surgery but I've never felt the need for that - the IV meds take care of the pain. Plus, the epidural needs to wear off to walk and I like to get going as soon as possible. It's all doctor and patient preferences I guess.

Is the epidural necessary?

Hi boxers! I had the general with an epidural... I have problems taking most pain meds so this was the route that was best for me. I would pick this method over taking some of the oral or IV meds that make you constipated but that is just my humble opinion. You can not walk while having one though but I had mine out on day 2 and went home after waiting 3 hours, making sure that my blood pressure was holding up ok. Evidently it can make your blood pressure go up or down (cant remember) when they remove it. It was good for me! Good luck with your appt.

Is the epidural necessary?

I went in thinking I wanted a general with epidural,
but the anethesiologist said the morphine works great in
most cases and I went with the general with morphine instead and it worked awesome, I also had pain releif in incision and that was awesome. was on Toradol 2nd
day and all went very well. I went in "terrified" of the pain but turned out I had next to none, Thank goodness! good luck whatever you decide.

Is the epidural necessary?

I guess it isn't necessary but I highly recommend it. I had the epidural done w/ general anethesia and found it to be great. It lessened the need for narcotics the first 24 hours. I am a person who hates taking meds. The nurses all commented on how alert and aware I was just a few hours after the surgery. I did not want to be totally sedated and out of it...but some prefer it.
