This is JUST GREAT!!

All the stress of this week, having finally told work and made leave arrangements and all that bs and I have broke out on my bottom lip with cold sores!

I usually get them every year, and usually around this time when the weather starts to change. Had them same time last year. I just didn't need them NOW!

Thanks for listening!

This is JUST GREAT!!

I hear ya - things just happen at the worst possible time. I just was getting ready for my surgery, cleaning and whatnot when my two dogs got sprayed by a skunk. On top of that, I had company coming, and my husband came home with a cold. Thank goodness I was able to escape that so far - as my surgery is scheduled in two days. Hopefully I can keep going like I am though, cause I don't want to reschedule.

Good luck to you with your surgery!!!

(((Cristine))) So sorry you're dealing with cold sores now on top of everything else. As you realized already, stress tends to bring them out.

I used to get cold sores all the time, until I started taking Vitamin C every day. However, around surgery times, I can't take Vitamin C -- most of our DRs will tell us not to, because it's a blood thinner. So the last time this issue arose for me, I did a lot of searching for non-blood thinning solutions.

This is going to sound very strange, but I kept running into the same suggestion everywhere I looked: nail polish remover, the cheap kind with acetone. You put some on a Q-tip and hold it against the cold sore for a while, several times a day. Yes, it burns but it, amazingly, caused mine to disappear within a couple of days, which was phenomenal. Apparently it penetrates the layers of skin and kills the herpes virus that's resulting in the local outbreak. Obviously it can't kill it throughout your entire body, so it won't prevent you from getting more in the future, but it can really help shorten the duration of existing ones, MUCH more effectively than solutions costing $10-20 like Abreva, which in my experience, only shortens it by a couple of days. Some people recommend mixing the nail polish remover with aspirin, or following it with NyQuil (topically, not orally); I did not do those things.

Here's a link to one of the many, many places I found this home remedy discussed:

http://www.articlecube.com/Article/S...ld-Sores/27423

It worked for me, but I do admit it does burn at first. I hope it works for you if you decide to try it.

Good luck with your surgery!

I have found that Lysine based products work wonders. It's what my dentist recommends. You can take it in pill form or there is a lip balm that actually contains it. However..you must check with your doctor if you take the pill form b/c it IS an herbal/natural remedy.

Hi, I get these all the time too. Call you doc and ask him/her to call you in a prescription for zovirmax...not sure it's the right spelling..but close enough they should know. It's really good stuff and helps within a couple days of taking it. I love the stuff.

Good luck!!!

This is JUST GREAT!!

ladyrebl,

I would just like to say that I was always prone to getting cold sores during times of stress, being run down and the cold weather BUT since my TAH/BSO over a year ago I have not had any !!!!

I would, by now, have had at least 2 or 3 breakouts, I know the virus stays in your body but because I have got rid of the organs that were making me so ill hence no stress through having pain and staying off work etc maybe that has kept it dormant

Just thought I would tell you this, good luck with your surgery in October.
