It's been a long time!

I haven't been here in a couple of years. I had to create a new account!
So, I have been on Estrace 2mg for 4 years. I can't get a clear answer on this. How long do I have to take the HRT's? I mean, women go through menopause naturally and I'm sure they don't all go running to the DR for HRT.
I am tired of the enlarged breasts and tummy. I KNOW they are a side effect of the HRT.
I am not a pretty person however when I don't take the HRT for a period of time. The family will agree with that also! Am I stuck on this forever? Is there a time when I might be able to wean off?
Sorry if the answers are posted somewhere. There is just SO much stuff on here, it's a bit overwhelming.

It's been a long time!

I've been on hrt for 7 years now and thus far have no plans to discontinue it. It is something that my doctor and I evaluate on an annual basis. I have bloodwork, pap test and mammogram. Once all the results are in we discuss what my options are. As long as the tests are okay and I am doing well hormonally she says that I can continue with hrt.

If you're having problems with enlarged breasts and tummy it may mean that your hormones aren't balanced. It may not be from the hrt itself, but that you're not on the right doseage for you. Hormones are not one size fits all. It's not unusual to have to do some tweaking and changing to find the right fit.

Have you talked with your doctor about your symptoms? If he/she isn't helpful when it comes to hormones, perhaps it is time to find another doctor for your hormonal needs.

It's been a long time!

Why don't you try reducing the dosage of your Estrace if you are having problems? I think how long you have to stay on HRT depends on your age, activity level, and how you feel. I am 40 and I'm not ready to go off HRT. It's important to me to maintain a normal activity level and sex life and skin quality. Without estrogen, I am a mess, especially emotionally. Women in natural menopause may very well do fine without HRT because if you still have ovaries, you are still producing some hormones. Without ovaries, your hormone production is virtually nil. That is why surgical menopause is so much more profound than natural menopause.

Talk with your doctor. Maybe you could try reducing your dosage or trying a different form of HRT. There are a lot of options.
