date set and now i'm scared

Today Dr. set my hyst for June 20 and I thought I was ready to hear this news but now I'm scared to death.
I thought he could do a LAVH or TVH but he says NO! I almost passed out. I am scared of all the pain
that might be associated with a TAH. Can't stand hospitals either. I feel like the world is closing in
on me. Need words of comfort.

Don't worry. Just confide your pain concerns to the doctor, anesthesiologist, and every other living person you meet in the precertification process to make sure you have adequate pain medication, and an alternative pain medication already written in your chart in case the first one doesn't work. Have ready a list of drugs that have or have not worked for you in the past. This will give you some feeling of control as you approach the surgery.

It's normal to be completely unglued at this stage of getting ready for the surgery. The waiting is the worst part.

BJ,
It is normal to be scared! It is normal. This is major surgery, and a major decision.

Be glad your Dr was honest with you. If he can't do a vag hyst, at least you know it going in.

Having been through a LAVH, I can definately tell you that while there is no tummy incision, there is still pain. The recovery time is not that much different. There are just as many internal stitches. Also, because you don't have that big incision across your abs, you tend to forget easier and overdo it, and then you pay. TAH girls don't seem to overdo it quite as early.

You will make it! They will give you really good drugs when you first wake up and you won't be in much pain. You will have a pain pump and can dose yourself as you need it. If you still need more, tell the nurses and they will help you.

We are here for you.

I was also absolutely TERRIFIED when I was told I had to have a TAH last summer. I had never even had a gyn exam before, much less had surgery! I had NO idea what to expect, and was really afraid of the pain, hospitals, doctors, etc.

This site really helped calm my fears. Read as much as you can, so you know what to expect, and what questions to ask your doctor. Please post all your questions and fears here - we'll do our best to help!

In short, if I can get through this, ANYONE can!

Hang in there!

hospital inevitable

Well, let's face it. We're all hospital bound. And there will be pain. But considering the pain we have been through, surgery's not so bad...

My TAH is scheduled for June 4th. I've had previous surgeries - four laps and one abdominal (the abdominal surgery was a ruptured tubal pregnancy repair). So I've had both, and I can honestly say that while the laps may be a day less in the hospital, there's really not much difference. A day here, a day there.

I could actually fit into regular clothes (waistbands and zip flys) again SOONER after my abdominal surgery because the incision is really low (just below hair line), and the lap incisions are mid-tummy and up (I have one scar just below my navel and one through navel).

You'll do fine. Ask the doc all your questions, learn as much as you can and focus on how great you'll feel when this is all behind you.
