posterior repair and first bm

I'm scared...really scared....any advice? I'm eating fiber-rich foods whn I can and I'm taking stool softeners as often as I can...I'm terrified of the first bm...will the posterior repair make it any more difficult or more painful?

How many stool softeners is your doc letting you take daily? I was using 6 -- 2 in the a.m., 2 around noon, and 2 around dinner time. And drink lots of water. If you haven't gone by day 5 (tomorrow) then call your doc's office.

On day 5, my doc told me to do 2 at-home Fleet enemas. That freaked me out even worse than trying to work up a BM! I mean, I had stitches inside and out PLUS lots and lots of swelling (used ice packs 24/7). And don't stop your pain meds yet either! It took me, percocet, and a little rest on the cold floor to calm down enough to do them. I used lots of KY on the fleet tips... and laid on the bathroom floor for maybe an hour before I could bring myself to do it. My DH offered to help but I was so exhausted and distraught I wanted to be left alone. I just wish then that I had someone to tell me what to expect so I wasn't feeling so isolated. I mean, if you think talking about hysterectomies makes people uncomfortable, try talking about rolo-rectal surgery!

Best wishes ~

Jenelle you are doing all the right things and gordonk and I have held each other's hands while we have recovered from ours. Not going to lie....it hurts but you can make it a little easier on yourself several ways. If you aren't already walking around, try to do so so the colon moves the waste down more. The worst part (if you don't have cramping in the colon and constipation.....no wait....that was me! lol) will be when you start really feeling like you need to go and you're scared to death. Use a glycerin suppository and let it really melt and do its thing in there so that when you do push to go, there is very little effort and straining on your part.....it will just go. This will sound stupid but I have one of those handicap toilet chairs that fits over the entire toilet that we borrowed from a friend. I find the extra height makes it easier to go and believe it or not, sitting straight up rather then bending over helped tremendously! The first one is usually the worst because you're so scared. It does get easier but please please please make sure you don't skip those stool softeners!

oh believe me, I'mnot skipping the stool softeners. I really really don't want to do an enema, but I will because I am so terrified. I really dread the cramping with the enema too And trying to get in the floor and position myself right...ack!

Thanks ladies for being here to answer my questions!!!

I drank lots of water and ate high fibre stuff, walked around the room as much as I could, had a stool softener the night before...and managed the first BM without any problem or pain. Although I must admit I was terrified!!!Good luck.

Poo Advice

Wow - grown women and we are scared to poop

My father-in-law is a doctor and brother-in-law is a surgical nurse. They both wanted me to take an enema on Friday after my surgery on Monday. I spoke with my own DR and he agreed. DH bought a fleet enema (bottle type) Worse part was getting down on the floor to use the stupid thing. Then I didn't allow the enema to work long enough before rushing to the potty Point is - it didn't truely work.

So the next day DH bought spository (spelling?) fleet enemas. Much easier and slower acting so you don't feel the need to hurry to the potty - it worked

Again the unknown was much scarier than the actual act. Relax and try something - the relief was way worth it I also used a pillow to hold onto during the BM - it kept me from feeling so much pressure when I "thought" I would need to push. Not much pushing required with an enema.

Drink as much as you can thru the day, and eat raisins or prunes.High fiber foods and not rich or spicy foods. Keep taking the stool softeners for a couple weeks to keep things going. Most pain meds will constipate,
I used Ibuprofen to help with inflammation.
I also had posterior repair, had my 1st stool 4 days afer surgery with the help of an enema.
I'm sending good vibes your way...thinking of good results for you !!

Not that anyone needed to know, but last night I started feeling gas-like pains and scary rectal pressure...no bm action, so I did an enema earlier this afternoon and just the relief from anxiety is wonderful.
