post-op incision care

I keep seeing ads on the web for incision care kits. What am I going to need to do at home to care for my incision? I'm having an abdominal hyst with bikini incision. Will the hospital give me the supplies I need, or should I buy one of these kits? I'm especially concerned because I am allergic to the adhesive on many brands of bandages.

My personal experience is that I didn't need to do anything for my incision. I had staples, and just kept them safe from being snagged on clothing and dried them thoroughly after showering. At day ten I had them removed and the doctor put on Steri-strips. He said these should stay on for about a week, and after that I don't need to replace them. I asked if there were any ointment I could put on the incision site and he said no, to just keep it clean and dry.
Good're thinking ahead!!

I guess it would depend on how they're closing that incision. Mine will be the "glue" so no exterior stitches or staples to be removed. The "glue" is great because you can shower right away and there's no extra care involved to keep things dry or whatever.
I've had many surgeries, and in the past after about 2-3 weeks I've massaged the incision(s) to limit the bumpiness and promote healing. You may want to check with your dr. about what will be used to close the incision and see what he/she recommends.

I also have adhesive allergies. They have alternatives, so be sure and tell them.

My Dr had me leave me incision uncovered and allowed me to let water run gently over it. Then, air dry. No other treatment was necessary, and actually can make it worse. You can't see my scar,or feel it.

I didn't have to do anything for my incision and I had staples. I was allowed to shower...and just made sure I patted the area dry after a shower. they said if I could let it be exposed to air for part of the day, it would help healing as well. No bandages, nothing.

I had dissoving stitches and no bandages. I was told to pat dry, thenuse a blow dryer after a shower to make sure it was really dry.
