scared to death

I'm scheduled to have an abdominal hysterectomy on June the 8th and am "scared to death". Five years ago I was in a bad, head on car collision. I was pregnant with my daughter and had to have several surgeries without anesthesia. The aches and pains of recovery aren't really what's worrying me...just the actual being knocked out. Is there anyone out there who has the feeling of being suffocated when being put under for surgery? Also, I'm presently taking Zoloft for panic attacks that started after the car accident; should I stop taking it?

Thanks for any help!

I can certainly understand your apprehension to being anesthitised and I'm sure there are other ladies out there that can share their feelings with you. It is such a scary thing and to have been thru what you are going thru..that makes it even that much harder.

Hang in there honey!

Jody,

You need to ask your doctor about how near to surgery you can continue with the Zoloft.

As to the fear of being put under: I had 3 surgeries in 6 months with general anesthesia, the last being my hysterectomy. I, too, was anxious about being put to sleep. Be sure to mention your anxiety to everyone you talk to on the day of your surgery. I was given something to relax me prior to going into the OR, and it took the edge off of everything. If you think you will be having trouble sleeping the nights prior to your surgery, be sure to ask your doctor for something for that, too.

Hope this helps.
