Nausea, Nausea, Nausea, ugh

Is anyone else struggling with nausea? It's almost been one week since my surgery, and I am as nauseaus as ever. The thought of food makes me cringe. Does anyone have any suggestions? Saltines and ginger ale help a bit. Should I ask my doc for meds? I'm beginning to get a little depressed.

I was very miserable once I got home. Was not too bad at the hospital. It has been slow, but getting better. Still can't eat anything really spicy and I love the spicy stuff. I think it is just a matter of getting used to things again. Saltines were what I used. Antacids did nothing. I never really vomited, but sure always felt like I was going to!

It can't hurt to ask for some meds. My doc sent me home with zofran, its an anti-nausea used for chemo patients. Works wonderful! I had intermittent nausea for the first week and took meds only as needed. As for the appetite, most sisters seem to report a change in appetite for the first few weeks. The only thing that sounded good to me was my birthday cake! lol, would have been nice if it had been something healthy. Call the doc and get on some meds. You will heal better if you are well nourished. Good luck!

Yup - nauseated here too. I had attributed to my meds for pain (Naproxen) which my dr. discontinued yesterday so we'll see.

As the others said, definitely see your doc. There are meds out there which can help with the nausea. In the meantime, if you aren't eating much you might want to investigate whether you could tolerate something like Ensure to get some nutrition in you and help you heal. If the idea of Ensure doesn't sit well, I can often tolerate pureed soups or veggies that are bland. Staying away from acidic soups like tomato-based things is probably better. And good old-fashioned chicken soup sometimes helps, too. Just sip away slowly and graze throughout the day until your stomach works it out.

Hugs and good luck!

Hope you get better soon. I know two things made me really sick, one was the percocet being given on an empty stomach, and the second were th IV antibiotics.
I had never had the antibiotic "flagyl" before, and between the 2 of them I was in the bucket for the first few days. I did find when they let me start eating,
saltines and a cola were the only thing I could stand for a while. I just had my 2 week check up today, and I have lost 10 pounds!
It will get better. Stacy

I didn't have much of an appetite for the first 10 days or so after the TAH. My DH was getting worried, and kept running to the store to get anything I mentioned might taste good. For me, it was cottage cheese and fresh fruit. I too have lost about 10 pounds. I had been trying to loose 10 pounds before the surgery, but just couldn't seem to loose it. So, I am really pleased. My appetite came back, but the weight hasn't - so far anyway.

I would definitely call dr. , i had a terrible reaction to the meds at hospital and had my head in a pan for the first 2 days..dr gave me prescription for phenagrin at discharge just in case it hung around after i got home.It cant be easy to heal while your sick and they will probably try to fix that problem..good luck to you

Nausea

Another possible factor is acid reflux. Mine flares up if I have a cold and cough a lot, and it appears the post-op belching is also doing the same thing. Both surgeries have left me really nauseous for several days, and as the gas subsides, so does the nausea.

Until you can get something from your dr, try over the counter Emetrol. It works great. It is like the old Coke syrup our moms used to give us. I started taking it when I was pregnant for the morning sickness, and in 20 years, I don't think there has ever been a day that I don't have some in my medicine cabinet.
