Got my FSH(?) Test Results...

Hey everyone!

I had my TAH w/BSO on 11/20 and my doc was concerned that with all of the adhesions and scar tissue that a portion of my left ovary may have been left inside me. His only concern was that with any active ovarian tissue I might run the risk of having some of the same adhesion/scar tissue/pain as I was having before.

On 12/28 (my six week check up) he had them run an FSH(?) blood test to check my hormone levels and they called yesterday with the results.

In the nurses very own words "Your results show your hormone levels are indicative of menopause and that you have no active ovarian function". WOOHOO!!!!!!!

So these things I've been feeling are actually hot flashes, my insomnia has a reason and my moodiness is not just in my head. So now, if this is as bad as it is going to get I am staying off of HRT and just going to look into what I need to take to keep my heart and bones healthy. Any ideas?

Thanks!!!

Lesley

Got my FSH(?) Test Results...

Ahh yes the wonderful world of hot flashes and insomnia. Welcome! The FSH test is Follical stimulating hormone. At first mine showed permanent menopause, with a level at 34, my estrogen was less then 10. But my little ovary kicked back in and about4 months later my numbers flip flopped to an FSH of 9 and estrogen of 134. Now don't panic by what I said, They intentionally left my little ovary because I lost the right one due to an unexpected large dermoid, and they hoped it would work. Anyhow, my Dr. ordered a bone density test to see where I was, so he can track it if I go into menopause. I was only 41 at the time. They have me taking calcium, which admittedly I have cut back on due to the fact that it was constipating me. I have just tried to increase calcium from food sources. Some days I do better then others! Remember you can only absorb about 500 mg at a time so you have to spread it out over the day. They gave me a quick way to figure out how much you are getting from food. If the label says something is 15% Calcium just add a zero and that makes it approximately 150 mg. Also for bone health be sure to do weight bearing excerise, walking and lifting weights are great ways of doing this. They didn't really mention anything to me about heart protection. I had decided that I didn't want to mess with hormones if I didn't have to, and that if for some reason I needed to go on I would have asked for some sort of bio-identical hormones. So far, none needed.
Good luck to you and continued good health.

Thanks! I was pretty confused regarding all of the labels about calcium, etc. I had been thinking of going to our Natural Foods store and speaking with a dietician they have on staff to see what she recommended as well.

I have begun walking and have all of my free weights and pilates items ready to go but have been afraid that if I use them I will wreck something inside.

Is this a normal fear?

Yep, normal fears!! I waited quite a while before doing any ab work, but started light weights and cardio at the 2 week mark as I had LSH. I pushed myself a little because my DS had a golf tournament 4 weeks after my surgery and they would not allow spectator carts and the course was spread out over about 5 -6 miles. I did it though, was totally wiped out and tender the next day, but I just took it easy for sa few days and was back on track. I even found that if I mowed the lawn and emptied the clippings bag, later in the evening and the next day I was crampy and that was about 3-5 months out. Just goes to prove that even though the outside looks like they didn't do much, they certainly did on the inside! I think its a great idea to go to a natural store to seek some advice. Anything you can do to make this entire overwhelming process easier...go for it. You can always use your Dr's advice in conjunction with the health food stores and develope what works best for you.

Ah, yes, How well I remember!! Have you checked out all the articles in the Hormone Jungle?? There is a lot of good info there, including a list of all the different types of HRT. And lots of good support from all of us Janes of the Jungle!!! I found that finding the right HRT or no HRT is helped by doing all the research that I could. We are here for you!
