How long does it take to feel the effects of no estrogen. I had though, prior to my surgery, that I would be put on estrogen in the OR (or certainly before I went home.) I am now three days out and feeling no effects. Does that just mean I have more stored up in other places in my body than some people do - and the hot flashes will start soon. My Dr. is going to do HRT - but we want to keep levels as low as possible to prevent "the return of the migraines!"

I am 8.5 weeks out and have had no menopausal symptoms. Some people are fortunate and never do. I don't plan on using estrogen unless I do.

(((Kris))) there is a tremendous variation in how soon and how strongly menopausal symptoms are felt in individual women after a BSO. I was perimenopausal before my surgery, and started having symptoms as soon as I woke up. Some women go as long as four to six weeks before they start feeling the effects of surgical menopause. And there are some symptoms, like lack of libido and energy, that usually take quite a while to surface.

In addition, some women feel the symptoms differently than others do. For example, I don't really get hot flashes -- I just get this weird electric buzzing sensation all over.

However... all women who lose their ovaries, whether or not they're having menopausal symptoms, need to be aware that the bone loss they can experience in the first year after the surgery is significant. Even if you don't have symptoms that require HRT, I would suggest that you talk with your DR about what steps you can take to maintain your bone mass. You may also want to have a baseline DEXA scan soon so that you can have another one in a year or two and assess how effectively you're protecting your bones.

I hope this helps.
